Date night is a big thing for any couple given our busy schedules in Singapore and all the more something to look forward to. One Bistro Wine Bar is a hidden gem in Bedok that you can bring your loved one to for a little escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The interior décor takes wining and dining to a whole new level with a cosy set up, romantic mood lighting and grape vines that cover the entire ceiling. We immediately felt ourselves unwind, and I instinctively gravitated towards a corner table for that little bit of extra privacy.
The kitchen is helmed by Chef Kevin Tay, whose passion for cooking is undeniable. With more than 30 years of experience working in some of the best hotels in Singapore, Chef Kevin has crafted a Western Fusion menu that he believes marries the best of both worlds.
French and other European recipes are recreated with an Asian twist to accommodate the local palate.
Chef Kevin’s secret is the love that goes into the food and to ensure the consistency in everything that he serves.
A proper romantic dining experience is as much about the food as the ambience, and the menu at One Bistro Wine Bar does not disappoint.
The Prawn Aglio Olio ($18) is one of the signature dishes, and it’s immediately obvious why; plump and juicy prawns are tossed in linguine and a spicy and garlicky homemade pesto that I wish I could bottle and take home with me.
For a pasta dish with more of a local flavour, try the Salted Egg Seafood Pasta ($23) which was an interesting combination. The salted egg pasta sauce was not overpowering or jelak at all and the generous serving of seafood made the dish pretty worth the price.
Another dish boasting an interesting flavour combination was the Barbecued Pork Ribs ($20), which was slathered in a sweet and sour Hawaiian marinade. The sauce was slightly spicy and tangy, which worked very well in highlighting the barbecued flavour of the tender meat.
Western food to me is all about the different kinds of meat dishes, and One Bistro Wine Bar’s fusion take on Braised Beef Cheeks ($25) was a sure winner. The beef was extremely tender and melt-in-your-mouth, with a hint of truffle from the sauce.
I loved the addition of dried Chinese mushrooms which somehow made this dish taste like home.
If your date is anything like me (forever hungry), order the Traditional Lamb Shank ($25). A sizeable portion of French-inspired tender lamb is served on the bone atop creamy mash and a tasty special sauce.
Escargots ($12) are not for everybody, but there’s nothing more fun on a date than trying something new together, or reminiscing a memorable holiday food experience. The juicy snails are served by the half dozen, in a buttery garlic herb sauce that you can mop up after with a baguette.
No romantic dinner would be complete without a nice bottle of wine, and at One Bistro Wine Bar you’ll be spoilt for choice. Don’t hesitate to ask any of the friendly staff for recommendations on wine pairings with your meal!
A romantic evening out shouldn’t have to cost you a fortune or require you to drive for miles. One Bistro Wine Bar could be your resident neighbourhood date night spot that’s a welcome escape, serving up food that will make you fall in love all over again.
