There’s a certain joy in knowing that some scents never quite leave you — like the buttery, coffee-kissed aroma of a freshly baked Rotiboy bun. And this November, that unmistakable fragrance is finally returning home.

After years away, Rotiboy is reopening its doors in Penang, this time at Sunway Carnival Mall, marking a long-awaited homecoming that feels both nostalgic and new. The official date, however, is still kept under wraps.
Few remember that Rotiboy’s story actually began in Bukit Mertajam back in 1998. What started as a humble bakery quickly grew into a Malaysian household name, its fame spreading across borders and breakfast tables alike.

By 2002, the brand had moved its headquarters to Kuala Lumpur — yet for all its success, Penang quietly watched its homegrown treasure slip away, with the once-busy outlet in Gurney Paragon Mall, Georgetown, also fading into memory.

Now, after years of absence, the original coffee bun is back to reclaim its roots. Crisp on the outside, pillowy within, and filled with that melting heart of salted butter, Rotiboy’s signature bun was inspired by the Mexican concha — but perfected for Malaysian taste buds.

It needs no reintroduction; one whiff and you’re already transported back to where you first tasted it. Alongside the classic Original Rotiboy, fans can look forward to other familiar names like Mochaboy, Buttermilkboy, and Cheeseboy, priced from around RM3.
While Penang has had its fair share of local favourites like Pappa Roti and Bread History, this reopening feels a little different. It’s not just another brand comeback — it’s a full-circle moment.
And to those wondering “Why Sunway again and not Queensbay?” — perhaps this is our second chance to do things right. Let’s not let it fade into nostalgia once more.
Drop by, grab a bun (or three), and show a little love once Rotiboy reopens in Penang — who knows, the next stop might just be your neighbourhood!
