SethLui.com Team Picks: 6 Meals We Love to Treat Ourselves to

A euphoric sense of freedom was bestowed upon me as we entered into Phase 2 of the nation’s re-opening on 19 June 2020. With several measures being slightly relaxed, we can finally dine-in at our favourite eateries and burn those well-deserved calories working out in the gym. Despite that, there still lingers an unspoken truth that the pandemic is far from over. Heading out is still discouraged and many companies are still implementing remote working arrangements.

From a simple burger to a feast fit for a king, there will surely be a recommendation that will suit your liking.

So here you have it, 6 meals the SethLui.com team loves to treat ourselves to!

1. Deanna, Editor

Favourite treat day food:

Bacon-Cheeseburger from Five Guys Singapore, and Milkshake with Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, and Bacon mix-ins.

What makes it so special:

I first tried Five Guys on a whim in London, and it really blew my mind—it’s the epitome of American burger and shakes coming together for a hearty, greasy, indulgent meal.

The Bacon-Cheeseburger comes with two thick and juicy patties and strips of greasy bacon. I’d opt for “All The Way” when it comes to toppings—which includes mayonnaise, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, grilled onions, and grilled mushrooms. It’s a hefty, show-stopping burger that makes you want to gobble it all up yourself.

And this intriguing Milkshake combination came from a conversation with Jason Zimecki, the Vice President for Five Guys Global Brand Standards. It’s his go-to order, and frankly, it tastes like a Snickers bar—that’s good enough for me.

I will pair my meal with:

With how hearty the meal is, I’d opt for something on the lighter, fruitier end when it comes to bubble tea. The Grapefruit Yakult Green Tea from Playmade by 丸作 hits all the right spots—it’s fruity, it’s tart and just the right amount of acidic, and the astringent green tea finish is tempered by Yakult.

Refreshing and great for digestion, this is one of those drinks that are perfect for washing down a greasy, satisfying meal.

After months of anticipation, Five Guys Singapore has not only reached our shores, we can now also enjoy their delectable burgers in the comfort of our homes! Burgers (from S$13), hotdogs (from S$11), and even sandwiches (from S$9), just name it and Five Guys will have you covered. Famous for its hand-crafted burgers with up to 15 customisable toppings, hand-cut fries, and vanilla milkshake, a meal from Five Guys is definitely worth its calories!

Already craving a greasy burger and a cup of rich, creamy milkshake to wash it down thereafter? Place your orders on GrabFood now!

Favourite treat day food:

It would hands-down have to be a burger—any burger—from Five Guys Singapore.

What makes it so special:

I think simply based on novelty because I know so many of us have waited for the day that Five Guys would open in Singapore. Also, I absolutely enjoy sinking my teeth into a good, juicy burger, and Five Guys is a treat that almost feels like a reward.

I will pair my meal with:

I would choose Playmade by 丸作 because they have such a wide variety of teas for everyone, not just milk teas. My favourite has to be their Honey Lemon Green Tea, as it adds both acid and sweetness to the meal, which would balance the richness of a burger.

Probably one of the first bubble tea outlets to introduce freshly-made flavoured pearls, Playmade by 丸作 won the hearts of bubble tea fans around the world with their famous pink cactus pearls. Constantly bringing new ideas to the table, the brand is not only known for its unique pearl options but also its innovative beverage selections.

Classic flavours like Honey Lemon Green Tea (Medium: S$5, Large: S$6.90) and Grapefruit Yakult Green Tea (Medium: S$7.70, Large: S$9.20) aside, Playmade has recently introduced their new Watermelon Bundle just in time to welcome the summer heat! Just for S$16.60, you and your partner can enjoy a large Watermelon Tea Blend and a Watermelon Milk Tea that comes with—yes, you guessed it—Watermelon Pearls. Wait no longer and order your favourite bubble tea on GrabFood right now!

Favourite treat day food:

I would have to go for a meal from béni

What makes it so special:

I do love a fancy meal and even better when I can have it in my pyjamas in front of Netflix. The juxtaposition is both jarring and playful—something I get a huge kick out of. After all, to have something prepared with such discipline and technical prowess (with a MICHELIN star no less) whilst in the most relaxed of settings is one of the best parts of ordering in.

I will pair my meal with:

Everyone has their bubble tea of choice and mine would have to be from Xing Fu Tang. Xing Fu Tang’s freshly made pearls with that signature burnt caramelised flavour get me every time.

A large cup of their signature Brown Sugar Boba Fresh Milk at the end of the night would be perfect.

Favourite treat day food:

If I were to treat myself, it would definitely be a big one making use of GrabFood’s multiple concurrent orders function! I’ll start off with Din Tai Fung’s Oriental Salad in Special Vinegar Dressing and a serving of their Oriental Wantons with Black Vinegar & Chilli Oil. Thereafter, pair their Fried Rice with Shrimps and Eggs together with a bowl of Pork Ribs Soup and Dough Fritters from Song Fa Bak Kut Teh!

What makes it so special:

A treat for myself will definitely consist of dishes that bring about warmth and a sense of familiarity. Since Din Tai Fung has been my go-to restaurant for comfort food, it is thus a must-have if I was to treat myself to a meal.

Of course, the fried rice would need some washing down, that’s why I always pair it with a bowl of soup. Since GrabFood allows for up to four concurrent orders from different restaurants to be placed at the same time, why not order a peppery and flavourful bowl of Pork Ribs Soup? I mean, who can resist Bak Kut Teh?

I will pair my meal with:

Tiger Sugar’s Brown Sugar Boba Fresh Milk, of course! I had it once during my last holiday to Taiwan, and have never turned to other brands ever since.

When it comes to quality dim sums and authentic Chinese food Din Tai Fung naturally comes to mind. After all, this Taiwanese restaurant franchise has been serving Huaiyang Cuisine since 1972. Fans of their steamed dumplings, eggy fried rice and hand-made noodles will be able to enjoy their mouth-watering dishes delivered straight to your doorsteps.

Whether you are craving for a plate of Fried Rice With Pork Chop (S$15.30), Dan Dan Noodles (S$9.90) or just a single serving of Steamed Pork Bun (S$2.50) Din Tai Fung offers such a wide variety of food that even the pickiest eater will have something to choose from! So, don’t miss out and place your orders now!

The OG of black sugar boba milk, Tiger Sugar has gone beyond serving fans just their Brown Sugar Boba Fresh Milk (S$5.60). With the belief in the art of mastering and perfecting just one or two creations and maintaining the quality of the products they have to offer, you will realise that Tiger Sugar is, in fact, extremely niched in their selection of beverages. Their tea and latte series of drinks aside, give their limited edition Brown Sugar Pearl Coffee Milk w/ Tiger Jelly (S$6.60) a try if you are in for something new! Tiger Sugar can be ordered via GrabFood here.

Favourite treat day food:

My choice of a treat day meal will be a mixture of my favourite cuisines. I will definitely order a Romaine Lettuce Stir-Fried Fermented Beancurd from Kok Sen Restaurant, as well as Chef’s Mum’s Chicken Curry, Buah Keluak Fried Rice, and Buah Keluak Tart from Candlenut

What makes it so special:

I have always wanted to try Candlenut, as I have heard great reviews about them. Besides that, I’m also a fan of local food, be it Chinese or Peranakan thus, both dishes from Candlenut stood out in an instant. Chef’s Mum’s Chicken Curry has to be something special since Chef Malcolm is carrying forward his mother’s legacy. The other dish—Buah Keluak Fried Rice sounds like something I’ve never tried before and that’s why I chose these two dishes. Since Candlenut doesn’t have any non-pork starters, it was a good opportunity for me to make use of GrabFood’s concurrent orders to mix and match with my favourite dishes from Kok Sen Restaurant.

I will pair my meal with:

Playmade by 丸作’s Watermelon Bundle! It’s seasonal and filled with vitamins so why not give it a try? Furthermore, I think it will be a great match when consumed together with my meal. Plus, who doesn’t love a good bundle deal?

With spice pastes made from scratch using only the freshest ingredients and dishes cooked for hours to bring out their natural flavours, you can now savour a scrumptious meal from Candlenut with their islandwide delivery on GrabFood here

For a taste of Chef Malcolm’s home-cooked meal, treat yourself to Candlenut’s Chef’s Mum’s Chicken Curry (S$25.68), Yeye Chicken Curry (S$25.68), and Aunt Caroline’s Babi Buah Keluak (S$29.96). And since it’s one of our favourite seasons of the year—durian season—, why not end your meal with a Mao Shan Wang Durian Cake (S$29.96 for 200g)? Bittersweet, rich and creamy durian flesh layered with moist vanilla sponge, drenched in coconut milk, and topped with freshly grated coconut. This is certainly a treat you will not want to miss!

6. Solomon, Videographer

Favourite treat day food:

To me, a treat day meal is one that can be enjoyed with my loved ones. As such, I will go for Kok Sen Restaurant’s Yang Zhou Fried Rice, Sambal Kangkong, and Deep Fried Frogs with Ginger. Since everyone in my family loves a hearty bowl of Bak Kut Teh, Song Fa Bak Kut Teh’s Spare Prime Ribs Soup is a must-order!

What makes it so special:

I chose these dishes because they are my favourite dishes! There are only a handful of good zi char and pork ribs soup places around Singapore, and unfortunately, there are none near my place. So I will always make use of GrabFood’s islandwide delivery to get what I want, especially the Spare Prime Ribs Soup

I will pair my meal with:

I will pair it with Playmade by 丸作’s Chrysanthemum Milk Tea. Playmade is one of the shops that I go to for my bubble tea fix and I choose them over the other shops because of the pearls. I will always opt for all the pearls!
