When SMITHS Authentic British Fish and Chips first announced their closure in May 2025 after nearly 15 years at Balmoral Plaza, regulars mourned the loss of one of Singapore’s rare purveyors of authentic British-style fish and chips.
That goodbye, however, turned out to be short-lived as the eatery went on to extend its lease not once, but twice! An Instagram post on 20 Jul revealed that they’ve managed to secure yet another extension, to the delight of Smiths fans.
In this heartening Instagram update, Smiths shared that their landlord has kindly agreed to a rental reduction, allowing them to stay open for another 6 months, with the option to continue beyond that. It’s a rare bit of good news in Singapore’s F&B scene, and a much-welcomed reprieve for fans who have been dreading the shop’s closure.
The British-run joint has been celebrated for its authentic fish and chips, with many hailing it as the closest thing to a UK chippy in Singapore. Their standard Cod or Haddock & Chips (S$29.50 for 180g; S$26.50 for 120g) remains a fan favourite, alongside hearty picks like the Dory & Chips (S$27) and Halibut & Chips (S$30.50).
For those craving something different, the Steak & Guinness Pot Pie (S$25.80) or the Lamb Doner Kebab in Pita Bread (S$22.20) are satisfying alternatives.
While you’re there, pair your main with their sides and snacks. The juicy Battered or Breaded Mushrooms (S$12.50), Giant Yorkshire Pudding with Caramelized Onions & Gravy (S$9) and indulgent Battered Mars Bar (S$7.10) are nostalgic treats straight from the UK.
For the rest of 2025, the Balmoral Plaza outlet lives on, riding on a wave of community love, nostalgia and darn good fish and chips. Whether this truly is their final extension or just another chapter in their revival story, one thing’s for sure: if you’ve been meaning to pay a visit (or return for another helping), now’s a good time to do so.
