51-year-old Soon Kee Wanton Mee has silently exited Pek Kio Market

For the regular supporters of Soon Kee Wanton Mee at Pek Kio Market & Food Centre, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but they are no longer there (for now). The signature yellow signboard with blue and red characters has been removed, and a new stall named Noodle Doodle Handmade Noodles that sells mee hoon kueh, you mian, and ban mian has taken over. They are still in the midst of getting ready and will most likely be opened next week.

On the stall’s official Facebook and Instagram page, there aren’t any official announcements stating that they have permanently closed. On their Google listing, it’s also stated as ‘Temporarily Closed’. We tried contacting them for the reason behind the closure and initially thought that the owner wasn’t in the pink of health. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, but his doctor had advised him to retire. As a result, the stall has temporarily ceased operations.

The wanton mee stall was established back in 1975 and constantly drew a long line of customers for its springy noodles, juicy wantons, and fiery sambal that packs a punch.

In Mar 2025, the owner was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after he had suffered a stroke, and the stall was forced to close for a few months. On 3 Sep 2025, they posted on Instagram about their 11 Sep return, much to the delight of their loyal customers.

However, when the stall had made a decision to replace their green melamine plates with disposable containers, many customers weren’t pleased with the change.

For now, we are uncertain about what lies ahead for Soon Kee Wanton Mee. They might reopen at another location in the near future, or they may never return at all. I guess only time will tell.
