Ah, the coconut craze. I’m one of those who actually queue up for coconut shakes, undaunted by snaking queues. It’s not a brag, but I like those drinks enough that I once waited almost an hour for something I chugged down in ten minutes. The Straits Refreshment Co. is now offering something that all coconut fans might want to give a shot—Japanese oden infused with coconut.
Oden is a Japanese stew that consists of hard-boiled eggs, daikon, fish cakes, and dashi soup. Sounds pretty ordinary, right? Nope. The Straits Refreshment Co. has upped the ante by fusing their chicken broth with none other than coconut—whether this is a hard pass or your new favourite food combination, that’s for you to decide.
All oden bowls come with soup, and patrons have six different options to pick from. Take your pick from Coconut Chicken, Tom Yam (additional S$1.50), Mala (additional S$1.50), Coconut Curry (additional S$1.50), Tomato (additional S$1.80), or Fish Collagen (additional S$3.50).
Ingredients start from S$0.90 apiece, with options such as fishballs, tau pok, radish, broccoli, and more.
The oden bowls are also designed to fit perfectly on top of a cup for hassle-free eating on the go. And while you’re at it, might as well indulge in a cup of their well-loved Straits Coconut (S$4.70), Avocado Coconut Milk (S$6.30), or Straits Coffee Coconut Latte (S$6.50) for an icy refreshment to beat the heat.
