Here is something bright and shiny to whet your appetite. Newly minted in the basement of Wisma Atria, Sugar Toast 初荟糖先生 is where you’ll find colourful artisanal bread that might be too pretty to eat. Hailing from China, where Sugar Toast is a household name, I’m surprised it took this long for them to make their way over here.

With over 14 varieties of toast, you’ll be spoiled for choice at Sugar Toast. As with Asian-style bread, they tend to be sweeter and softer than Western-style bread. The bread here is painstakingly made with a process that takes up to four hours; what you get is a tender, buttery loaf that you can’t help but finish.

During the layering process, the dough is pounded over 200 times followed by precisely folding the dough numerous times for the fluffy and pillowy texture, which is almost as laborious as the lamination process when making croissants.

Characterised by the distinctive swirls from the way the dough is braided, you can’t help but snap a picture at these chunky folds.

They look very similar to the bread that used to come with wrapped with ice cream, but this Sugar Toast’s one is thicker and a little more scrumptious.

Choose from the fragrant Orignal (S$6.90) where you get rich folds of golden dough or the kaleidoscopic Rainbow Cranberry Toast (S$7.90) which is a combination of Sugar Toast’s Original, Matcha and Dragon Fruit flavours.

If we have any sweet potato lovers, then, the Purple Sweet Potato Toast (S$7.90) made with sweet potato puree will tickle your fancy.

Hold on; it gets better. To celebrate their grand opening and on 11.11 no less, Sugar Toast will be having an exclusive five-day-only promotion from 11 to 15 November 2020, where you can enjoy an 11% discount on all items. How’s that for an 11.11 sale?

As someone for a penchant for all things bread, this was everything you’ll want your bread to be. Soft, sweet and comforting, all carbs should aspire to inspire this level of solace. Head down to Sugar Toast for a serving of their loaves and trust me, you’ll be back for seconds.
