Chinatown Complex has just lost one of its glimmering stars. On 10 Sep 2025, the owner of Tai Hwa Coffee Stall, Mr Tan Chew Ming (nicknamed Song Peng), passed away at the age of 79.

The news was shared by a member of the Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 Facebook Group on 11 Sep 2025, and the comments section was flooded with condolences and heartfelt respects from fans.

Many were taken aback by the sudden passing of Mr Tan, with a few recounting visiting his stall mere weeks ago.
Mr Tan was a man who lived his craft, brewing coffee from the young age of 13. Even in his twilight years, he never once contemplated putting down the kettle and coffee sock. The stall was widely known for serving one of the best traditionally brewed coffees in Singapore, with customers praising the calming fragrance of each cup, as well as his dedication to keeping prices as low as possible.

Among countless other accolades, Tai Hwa Coffee Stall was named one of the top 8 coffee stalls in Singapore in a contest organised by Marigold in 2013. They’ve also been featured in numerous newspapers and online publications, all showering Mr Tan with rightfully earned praise.

According to an obituary plastered on the shutters of Mr Tan’s stall, the Wake was held from 11 Sep 2025 to 12 Sep 2025, with the funeral itself scheduled for 13 Sep 2025.
It is currently unknown if anyone will succeed Mr Tan, or if Tai Hwa Coffee Stall will close permanently.
Our deepest condolences to Mr Tan’s family and all who grieve his passing. May he rest in peace.
