Remember when we discussed the possibility of having Impossible bak chor mee, char siew bao, and xiao long bao? Well, Tip Top Curry Puff and Impossible Foods have come up with the next best thing—the world’s first Impossible Rendang Puffs.
A partnership clearly made in heaven, we can now enjoy our local favourite snack made with delicious, sustainable plant-based meat. Cooked with a special blend of Nonya spices, lemongrass, blue ginger and sambal chilli, these rendang puffs sure pack a punch! The spicy, flavourful goodness is then wrapped in Tip Top’s signature pastry skin and fried till a satisfying golden brown.
Thankfully, I had the privilege of trying the puffs first-hand, and here are my thoughts.
Little Impossible flags were planted into the puffs, serving as an indicator that they are, indeed, the Impossible rendang puffs. The puffs were deep-fried to an appetising golden-brown, and at first glance, it looked like a normal everyday curry puff.
As an avid fan of Tip Top Curry Puff, I was hoping that I wouldn’t be disappointed by the overall taste of the Impossible rendang puffs. At first bite, I noticed that the puff was extremely crispy and flaky—just the way I like it.
Taste-wise, it passed with flying colours. With almost the exact flavour as beef rendang, it was hard for me to process that it was actually made from Impossible meat. My only bone to pick with the rendang puffs was the texture of the “rendang”.
Because I eat meat constantly, it was easy for me to tell the difference in the texture. It was somewhat mushy and it didn’t quite hit the spot. However, if you don’t usually consume meat, this would be a good opportunity for you to try the rendang flavours without actually having meat.
