Yong tau foo, a Hakka Chinese dish, is a classic comfort meal in Singapore. Yong tau foo holds a special place in many hearts, known for being a healthier alternative for meals due to its customisation aspect. Tofully, hidden in Bedok, is a perfect example of this comfort food.
As a Singaporean, I am rather ashamed to admit that this was one of the rare times I’ve eaten yong tau foo. I knew that I needed to redeem myself, and so going to Tofully was decided!
With the Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre around the corner, I was pleasantly surprised at Tofully’s location. Located in a small coffee shop, it was definitely easy to miss.
The neon signage was adorable, really attracting eyes to the inconspicuous stall. With bright signs indicating the types of yong tau foo offered, icons of several news publications were seen, clearly showing Tofully’s popularity. It seems that Tofully’s quality was vouched for!
However, my eyes were drawn towards the many options displayed on the shelves. Surprisingly, the variety was quite plentiful, even more so for a simple stall. With 6 types of vegetables and about 23 different ingredients, mostly priced at S$0.80, I was definitely spoilt for choice. Despite having tried many of the items before, I was determined to get a worthy experience.

A unique fact about Tofully would be the different soup bases — Laksa, Tom Yum, Mala & Chicken. Of course, my spice intolerance limited my options, but I am sure customers would appreciate the wide variety. I was eyeing the Mentaiko Rice Bowl (S$7.20 for 5 ingredients), but decided to try out their classic yong tau foo instead.
Despite the location, there was a good crowd on the Thursday I went. Majority were elderly and middle-aged folks, there to catch a quick bite before heading off for the day. The idea made good sense, considering how Bedok interchange was just nearby.
Something to note would be that the tables were catered to big groups, so bringing a couple friends to enjoy a nice meal out would be a great way to bond and catch up.
What I tried at Tofully
As I chose 8 ingredients in Chicken Soup base, my total came out to be S$7.60— not too bad for a wide spread. Considering how everything is handmade freshly everyday, the price of S$0.80 per ingredient was understandable in my books.
What I loved most was the chicken broth. Incredibly full-bodied yet light, the soup warmed me. The taste reminded me of a much lighter version of chicken essence. I felt that the soup truly showcased the ingredients’ freshness, elevating the whole dish. For the health conscious, you will be delighted to know that there’s no MSG involved!
In my humble opinion, Fishballs (S$0.80) and Fishcakes (S$0.80) are classics in yong tau foo. So, it made sense when Tofully’s did not disappoint. QQ and super springy, the bounce was delightful for my mouth, giving its own bite back.
Having seen so many good comments on their Fried Meatball (S$0.80), I had to give it a try. The mushroom and meat combination was a classic; I especially loved the light crisp exterior thanks to the frying. Munching on it with a slurp of soup made for a flavour bomb.
However, my favourite had to be the Eggplant with Fish Paste Filling (S$0.80). On one hand, you can taste the tender bitter flesh of the vegetable. Yet, on the other hand, the fish paste gave a slight spring, giving textural contrast to the overall product. I do admit that the fish paste’s flavour was not too prominent, which may be a hit or miss to some folks.
Final thoughts
Drinking some hot chicken soup and munching on some fresh yong tau foo at Tofully would definitely be an experience I would like to have again. Perhaps, I would come next time to try out the Aburi Mentaiko Mayo (S$2) with some of their fried goodies!
