With how warm Singapore’s climate is getting, there are often times where a thirst-quenching dish is ultimately necessary. That is exactly why I found myself standing outside of Wan Mei Dessert in Katong.
Hidden in Odeon Katong, no one would believe that such a quaint dessert place sits here, since its location is slightly obscure. Even I, who have been living in Katong all my life, was pleasantly surprised at the short distance I had to travel.
With the natural light shining through the clear windows, Wan Mei Dessert immediately gave off a free and easy atmosphere. The forest green walls were soothing to the eyes, and the light chatter from customers gave off a homey vibe that made me relax and enjoy the jazzy Chinese music filling the place.
The name Wan Mei originated from a fun play of the Chinese characters 完美, which means perfect. Since the pronunciation of 完 and 碗 (meaning bowl) is the same, switching them would result in the dessert place’s name, 碗美! I chuckled at the clever wordplay when I saw the sign board, loving the sense of humour.
What I tried at Wan Mei Dessert
Of course, we just had to order the Shaved Ice Set (S$10.90), which was famed for its unique options.
You can choose your shaved ice flavour, syrup and toppings with each set. There were lots to choose from, wacky flavours like Milo Dinosaur or Matcha, and syrups such as the Calpis and Gula Melaka. Don’t even get me started on the toppings like Mini Mochi and Pandan Sago, which definitely left me spoilt for choice.
Torn between what sauces and toppings would go well with my choice of Milo Dinosaur, I enlisted some aid from the friendly cashier, who gladly passed on his suggestions. As Milo Dinosaur would not go well with fruity toppings, I had decided on neutral ones like the Mini Mochi, Earl Grey Jelly and Almond Slices with a side of milk syrup.
The milky flavour from the syrup definitely helped in terms of the cohesion of the ice shavings and milo powder, giving off a sweetness that truly reminded me of the local beverage. The powdering of milo was light and did not overpower the flavours from the shaved ice, which I appreciated.
The mochi and almonds did add a bite, however, I felt that it did not contribute much in flavour. The only topping that did for me was the earl grey jelly, as it added a hint of floral notes. I also felt that the amount of toppings were on the lesser side. But, it does make sense, considering how much effort it takes to prepare a wide spread to choose from.
I wanted to try a fruity option, and the Yuzu Ice Dessert (S$5.90) did not disappoint! The burst of sweet from the mango bursters combined with the acidic yuzu ice gave a real good balance of flavour.
The lychee hor fun and nata de coco added a chewiness to the dessert. Flavour wise, they did not add much to the yuzu ice. However, when eaten alone, the hor fun gave slight hints of lychee sweetness.
I loved the tartness of this one, as it is especially refreshing in Singapore’s weather. For those who love sour treats, this Yuzu Ice Dessert will definitely be right up your alley!
Wan Mei Dessert prides themselves in making the Orh Nee (S$5.90) fresh daily, so it was a no-brainer to order. I usually avoid it because of my reluctance to yam, but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
The authentic yam paste had a mellow nuttiness that paired excellently with the sweetness from the pumpkin. I found out afterwards that this dessert also is rather filling, leaving my appetite sated.
Final thoughts
Wan Mei Dessert definitely has my vote, with refreshing ice desserts that are unique and a hot dessert that I thoroughly enjoyed. On days where my throat feels parched, I now have a new treat. Fellow Easties, Wan Mei Dessert is definitely a place to consider for an afternoon treat!
