Do you remember the first time you tried nasi padang? If you’re from Singapore’s golden generation, your first experience was likely at Warong Nasi Pariaman along North Bridge Road, that first opened in 1948. Unfortunately, the 78-year-old eatery has just announced that it will be closing by the end of the month.

It all started with a Facebook post on the eatery’s page made on 20 Jan 2026, where the owner gave a heartfelt thank you to all their loyal customers before announcing their closure. While no specific reason has been given for the closure, some speculate that it may have been caused by a recent surge in rental fees for the Kampong Glam area.

According to the National Library Board, Warong Nasi Pariaman is Singapore’s oldest nasi padang stall, having been open long before we even gained our independence. It was first opened by a man named Isrin bin Ibrahim from the West Sumatran city of Pariaman, hence the eatery’s name. Ownership has been passed down the family tree for decades, but it looks like the end of the road is here.

Nostalgia can’t save everything. An outcry of support and comments reminiscing on their memories with Warong Nasi Pariaman followed, with some even wondering if it’ll reopen in a smaller location. While no plans have been announced, we’ll keep you updated if that changes.

Warong Nasi Pariaman closes - historical relics

In 2021, the National Heritage Board declared Warong Nasi Pariaman to be 1 of 7 mini-museums in Kampong Glam that tell stories of times past. You can find various artefacts and relics from the old days within the eatery, like the ones pictured above, as well as mock set-ups of the charcoal cooking stoves they use.

Our plate of Nasi Padang totalled S$9 when we visited, with Beef Rendang (S$4.50) accounting for a significant portion of the cost. The best part was definitely their sambal, which had a strong smoky aroma from the charcoal fire that lingered for quite a while.

Warong Nasi Pariaman closes after its last day on 31 Jan 2026. Make sure to give them a visit before it’s too late; we here at SETHLUI.com definitely will.
