In an Instagram post published on 6 Sep 2022, a netizen shared that the much beloved minced meat noodle hawker stall, which has been in business for more than 30 years, will be officially closing on 30 Sep 2022.

Online reviews yielded praises for the bak chor mee stall, commending its strong umami flavours as well as its generous amount of ingredients. There were also disclaimers of the long queues that they had to endure just for a bowl of bak chor mee.

When we dropped by for a taste of its famed bak chor mee, our writer had praised its broth for having an insanely generous amount of minced meat. The bits of crispy fried lard and spring onions made every spoonful a symphony of taste and texture.

Another selling point were its plump pork dumplings, which were made fresh every morning. They were stuffed with marinated pork and other secret ingredients, and burst with flavours with every bite.

Even with soaring food prices due to inflation, 58 Minced Meat Mee had kept their prices very affordable, with their bak chor mee being sold at three price points: S$3, S$4 and S$4.50.

Alas, the impending closure of 58 Minced Meat Mee is yet another story that we often hear these days of our beloved hawkers calling it quits. Whether it’s due to high rental cost, ageing or simply a lack of interest from the newer generations, these closures are all but expected at this stage.

In the coming days, as you too stand in line at 58 Minced Meat Mee, be sure to observe the sights, remember the sounds and more importantly savour that bowl of bak chor mee, as soon, all of it will be another memory.
