Chicken rice is one of those quintessential Singaporean dishes. It’s comforting and tasty, sure, but I’ve always thought that there’s nothing that can surprise me when it comes to chicken rice.

New Teck Kee Giant Truffle Chicken Rice 1

Well, New Teck Kee Chicken Rice at Rail Mall is here with a mouthwatering, mind-boggling chicken rice dish that you’ll want to order. Served in a huge portion, their Truffle Chicken Rice (S$23) is big enough for four to share.

You can opt for dine-in at this air-conditioned zi char restaurant, or get this massive chicken rice delivered to your home—New Teck Kee Chicken Rice does islandwide delivery.

You might be wondering whether to splurge on this chicken rice platter, given that a humble plate usually goes for just S$3. Well, to save you the guesswork and to satisfy your curiosity, I decided to give this Truffle Chicken Rice a try.

Since I’m currently staying in Bukit Panjang, I got the chicken rice delivered for S$10—the delivery fee will differ depending on your address, though.

Before even lifting the lid, I could already detect the subtle scent of truffle. It only intensified when I opened the container. Mingling with the familiar ginger and garlic notes, the truffle actually added a much-appreciated earthy fragrance and flavour.

The platter came with both steamed and roasted chicken—perfect for those who can’t decide. However, it’s a pity that the chicken was mostly breast meat, and hence a little tougher than I would’ve preferred.

Of course, we need to talk about the rice as well. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very impressed. Nothing too dire, but it sits solidly in the “average” category. As my husband mentioned when he took a bite, “It’s just rice lor.”

For spice lovers, you can’t miss out on the chilli. The sharp bite and lingering heat make this a good accompaniment to the platter, and frankly gives the aforementioned rice a bit of oomph to make up for the average taste.

New Teck Kee Giant Truffle Chicken Rice 4

It’s truly a huge platter of chicken rice, suitable for four or maybe two very hungry teenage boys. I ended up saving a third of the rice and adding it into homemade claypot rice for dinner—an idea for those of you with leftovers!

Should you try this dish from New Teck Kee? I’d say yes, if you have a party of four or if you just want to see what truffle tastes like in chicken rice. But I probably wouldn’t make a repeat order—consider my curiosity (and appetite) sated.
