I don’t tell many people this, but my favourite ice cream-on-a-stick (is that what you call ’em?) is hands-down, Magnum. There’s something quite sensual about the rich chocolate shell cracking between your teeth to expose a creamy core. However, over the past few years, age has gotten the best of my digestive system and I’ve grown sensitive to lactose.

Too much ice cream in a sitting and I’m running to the loo with massive pain in my gut (TMI, sorry). That’s why I was over-the-moon excited when I saw on my Instagram feed that Magnum has now launched a Dairy-free line, which currently comprises of two flavours, Almond and Sea Salt Caramel (S$11.90 per pack of three).
Available at all major supermarkets, online via RedMart, Everyday Vegan Grocer and the EatRoamLive marketplace, there’s now an extra spring in my step when I hop over to my freezer for an icy treat. I can’t decide which is my favourite between the two, but I have to commend the Sea Salt Caramel option for beautifully toeing the delicate the line between sweet and salty.
It also tastes mildly creamy; not as rich as their regular counterparts. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less enjoyable. In fact, I was so happy I didn’t feel any discomfort at all once I’d polished off my Magnum Dairy-free ice cream—a true test of its worth.
Oh, and if you happen to be on a journey of vegan or vegetarianism, rejoice; Magnum’s Dairy-free line is certified vegan by the European Vegetarian Union. The ice cream incorporates a pea protein. Talk about a sweet spot.

Their other exciting launch is also the Magnum Brownie (S$4.50 each)—a convenient snack bar that rips open to reveal a Vanilla & Caramel Ice Cream Brownie bar. This range slightly differs from their regular ice cream bars in that it’s not propped up on a wooden stick; instead, rip the packaging open and consume it much like you would an ice cream sandwich.

The first thing I noticed is the ample layer of brownie that’s satisfyingly moist. But be careful about making a mess; I realised my hand was warming the ice cream bar much too fast and it melted too quickly for my liking. In the future, I’d much prefer sliding an ice cream bar into a small bowl and enjoy with a spoon. Perhaps I wasn’t doing it right—how else would you handle it?
I also appreciated the ratio of the layers—there was just the right amount of brownie for me to enjoy this extra layer, but it doesn’t take away from the charm of vanilla ice cream and chocolate shell. With two more options now added to Magnum’s line, there’s really something for everyone (and pleasure truly is within reach).
