We’re all familiar with your typical morning Asian breakfast such as nasi lemak, roti prata and chee cheong fun. One thing they have in common is that they are usually eaten sitting down and are not really meant to be eaten on-the-go. What if I told you there’s an Asian food item meant for that? The answer is Mr. Onigiri.

Mr. Onigiri is a takeaway kiosk that opened in early October 2022 along Upper Thomson Road. It specialises in onigiri, a Japanese rice ball made of steamed rice that’s compressed into a triangular and wrapped in nori seaweed sheet.

The story behind the takeaway kiosk came about when the owner and his wife went to Okinawa several years ago and fell in love with onigiri, but couldn’t find any nice or affordable ones in Singapore. Thus, they decided to make their own and started a home-based business in 2021

How it differentiates itself from traditional rice ball is with its use of modern fillings, some of which have even been localised. One example is the Otakotak Onigiri (S$5.90) which includes Japanese seaweed, Japanese rice, tamagoyaki, spam, Muar otak, Japanese cucumber and mentaiko sauce.

Other options include Signature Melted Cheesy Crispy Chicken (S$5.90), Truffle Aioli Chicken Karaage Onigiri (S$6.90), Double Yummy Double Emi (S$5.90), Mentaiko Kani Kama Onigiri (S$4.90), Teriyaki Fried Tofu Onigiri (S$4.90) and Spam With Onigiri (S$3.90).

They sell side dishes such as Chicken Karaage (S$5.90), Ebi Tempura (S$3.90), Cheese Fingers (S$4.90) and Crab Cream Croquette (S$4.90).

To wash it all down, there is a range of flower tea options such as Baby Owl, Brooklyn Babe, America’s Sweetheart and Magical Turn for S$3.90 each. If you’re ever in need of a quick Japanese bite, Mr. Onigiri has got you covered!
