I was initially confused when I read about a new hawker stall, Happy Wok located at 93 Toa Payoh Lor 4.

Even after re-reading a Facebook user’s description of “80% of the kuay tiao is 30% deep fried, 20% 70% deep fried” several times, I was still confused. But the hor fun just looked so good that I knew had to go down and find out what it was all about.

Happy Wok - Storefront

Despite having opened just this month (May 2023), Happy Wok has already updated its storefront menu to feature a cleaner and more stylish design.

Happy Wok - Signature Crispy Hor Fun

I decided to try Happy Wok’s Signature Crispy Hor Fun (S$7). After my first bite, I was lost for words and had to pause to take it all in. The flavourful sauce full of wok hei clung to crispy noodles. Together with the generous ingredients added, it was incredibly moreish and I couldn’t stop eating.

The dish was made up of deep fried hor fun in a thick full-bodied sauce, yet it almost seemed like only part of it was deep fried while the rest was not. The textural contrast as the fried hor fun absorbed the sauce was to die for. Sometimes, delightfully crisp and at other times having a soggier crunch, the entire experience of the dish changed as the noodles soaked up the sauce as I ate.

Happy Wok - Signature Crispy Hor Fun spoonful

The fried hor fun was not in the least bit greasy or jelak, and I much preferred it to regular hor fun that can get very starchy.

Happy Wok loaded up their hor fun with fish cake, chye sim, beaten egg, thinly sliced pork, 2 big prawns and 4 lala. The seafood was extremely fresh, and the prawns were naturally sweet.

Other than fried hor fun, Happy Wok also offers a Classic Horfun (S$5) and various fried rice dishes like their Egg Fried Rice (S$3.50) and their Olive Fried Rice w/Chicken (S$5). Whether their Egg Fried Rice is Uncle Roger-approved or not is a question for another food adventure.

I truly enjoyed my meal from start to finish and can’t wait to be back for more! Make sure to drop by Happy Wok for your taste of mind-blowing hor fun, too.
