In the bustling culinary landscape of Osaka, a new and daring creation has emerged in Singapore’s Don Don Donki: Crab Ice Cream (S$4.90).

This unusual dessert, originating from Osaka has captivated adventurous food lovers with its bold, unorthodox flavour profile.

Now you must be thinking what it tastes like. Well, the ice cream is made using real crab meat, which gives it that authentic seafood taste of the ocean.

This integration of crab into a creamy, frozen base results in a distinctive flavour experience that is both polarising and, if I must say, quite disgusting.

Upon the first bite, the ice cream’s rich, creamy texture is immediately evident. However, it is the unmistakable taste of crab that surprises and challenges the palate. It hits you as if you’re taking a whole mouth of seawater. A strong salty and briny taste as if you were tasting the ocean.

Think of it as having the creamy roes and innards of a crab condensed into an icy and mildly creamy base. That mixed in with blended-up crab sticks which gives the little red and white specks in the ice cream.

The flavours are robust and powerful leaving a lasting briny and crabby.

The initial mild sweetness of the ice cream is quickly followed by the briny, umami notes of crab, creating a complex and layered taste sensation. The flavour is described as robust and powerful, leaving a lasting impression that lingers long after the ice cream has melted away.

This was definitely not my cup of tea, or should I say cup of ice cream. This is not for the faint-hearted but I guess if you’re a huge fan of crab then this might be for you.
