Rock climbing is one of my favourite sports. It allows you to be active physically while engaging your mind with creative problem-solving. At the same time, the social nature of the sport means you are most likely to make friends at the gym who will also give you climbing tips. Combine all that with comfortable indoor environments that are usually air-conditioned, and you can see why even someone as unsporty as me would love it.

Rock climbing gyms Singapore - BFF Climb

If you are new to rock climbing, you might be wondering where you can do it and what the differences are between all the climbing spots, a.k.a. “climbing gyms”. Keep scrolling to find the ones that best suit your interest.

Types of rock climbing

Before going into the locations, let’s have a brief breakdown of the most common types of rock climbing you will find in Singapore. For this article, we will be focusing on indoor rock climbing, as that is what the vast majority of climbers will do. Also, there aren’t many outdoor climbing spots in Singapore. Within indoor climbing, there are 2 broad categories – bouldering and high-wall rock climbing.

Bouldering involves climbing shorter routes without a harness. Floors are padded and walls are shorter in height, making it safe for climbers to fall & land, even from the top. Just imagine climbing a giant boulder rather than a wall. High-wall rock climbing involves climbing with a rope and harness, and can be done solo with the auto-belay system or with a belayer for top-rope and lead climbing

Having this basic knowledge is important because not all rock climbing gyms offer both boulders and high walls. And this will help you decide where to go.

Maximising entry passes

Another good information to note is that different gyms have different entry fees. And these come in the form of passes and memberships. Buying a set of passes like 10x Passes is usually more worth it than buying 1x Entry Pass, because the cost of each pass is lower when you buy the 10x package. For example, buying 1 pass might set you back S$27, but buying 10 of them would cost you S$200, making each pass S$20 instead.

Most gyms also allow you to share these passes with friends, so I would highly recommend finding some buddies to climb with. This will allow you to split the cost for entry while trying out the hobby together. Buying multiple passes at a gym is also a good investment if you plan to climb at the same place often. But do note when the passes expire and plan your purchases accordingly. These passes might look slightly pricey on the surface, but when you consider that they give you all-day access to the climbing gym with no limits to re-entry, it makes sense.

Memberships usually have different tiers and are paid for monthly, letting you enter the gym a number of times a month, or unlimited times, depending on which tier you go for. Some gyms also offer discounts or packages for first-time visitors, so make sure to visit the website of the climbing gym before you head down to it. Also factor in the rental of shoes and harnesses, which will be charged separately.

Route-setting

If you’re totally new to rock climbing, you might be wondering how climbers can visit climbing gyms so regularly. Wouldn’t they have tried every route and problem there is after a while? This is where route-setting comes in. Route-setters at climbing gyms regularly reset their walls, removing old problems and introducing new ones. This could happen weekly or monthly, providing fresh experiences to climbers who frequent the same place. Each gym has its own route-setting schedule as well as grading systems that determine the scale of difficulty, so be sure to find out more when you visit! Now, let’s take a look at all the climbing gyms in Singapore.

1. BFF Climb

Rock climbing gyms Singapore - BFF Climb Bendemeer

BFF Climb offers climbing that caters to many people, from beginners to seasoned climbers. They have 3 gyms2 in Tampines and 1 in Bendemeer. I would personally recommend going to BFF Climb Bendemeer as it is one of the bigger rock climbing gyms and offers a diverse climbing experience.

There are plenty of routes and problems to solve with a wide range of difficulty levels. And yes, you can try out both bouldering and high walls here at the Bendemeer climb zone. Rental of harnesses is also free, which is not the case in most other climbing gyms.

All the high walls here are equipped with the auto-belay system, which basically means you can climb without additional support from a second person. Just make sure to approach the staff for guidance if it is your first time using it.

For the two outlets in Tampines, BFF offers a dual-location pass where you can access both gyms using one pass on the same day.

A single entry pass is S$23.98 for BFF Tampines gyms and S$27.25 for BFF Bendemeer. Youths under 18 can get passes at S$17.44 to any outlet.

The Multipass of 5 to any BFF gym is priced at S$119.90 while the Multipass of 10 is S$207.10. These Multipasses are shareable and valid for one year

BFF Climb also has guided classes for kids and adults, so do check those out if you’re interested.

2. Boulder Planet

Boulder Planet is one of my favourite climbing gyms. With 1 gym located in Sembawang and 1 in Tai Seng, they offer boulder routes that will test your technique and problem-solving skills. For beginners, I recommend going to Sembawang rather than Tai Seng, as the space is much bigger. This naturally means more variety of lower-level boulder problems to attempt. New climbers might find Boulder Planet Tai Seng’s limited boulders too challenging for a start, but experienced climbers will enjoy them much more.

There is equipment like hangboards and dumbbells for strength training, as well as shower facilities if you need to wash up after a chalky climb session. Both Boulder Planet outlets also have a shop where you can browse climbing essentials like chalk bags, harnesses, apparels, brushes and shoes. You can also try out climbing shoes if you’re looking to buy a pair. At Boulder Planet Sembawang, there is also an area with tables & chairs if you need a spot to catch up on work.

If you are new to climbing and are going to visit Boulder Planet for the first time, consider getting the Starter Pack. This is a S$55 package that includes an 80-minute introductory class, shoe rental and 2 weeks of unlimited entries to Boulder Planet. When I first started bouldering, this was what I went for. Book a slot here.

Single Entry Passes to Boulder Planet cost S$33, while 5x passes cost S$135 and 10x passes cost S$220. Youths aged 18 & under can enter for just S$16 before 6.30pm on weekdays. There are also Monthly Plans you can go for, which can range from S$59 to S$121 a month, not inclusive of registration fees. These monthly plans include perks like a 10% discount at the Boulder Planet shop and being able to bring in first-timers for free climbs

3. boulder+

If you are looking for a big bouldering gym to spend your day at, consider boulder+ at Chevrons and Aperia Mall. If you live in the west, or don’t mind travelling down to that part of Singapore, you’ve got to check out boulder+ Chevrons. It is the largest bouldering facility in Singapore and has even hosted athletes like Sports Climbing Olympic Gold Medalist Janja Garnbret. You could literally spend your day there, attempting all the different boulder problems.

The Aperia gym is no pushover either, having a wide space with a cave-like structure in the middle, allowing you to climb upside down if you want to. I would say that the routes at boulder+ are on the more challenging side, but because there are so many routes spread out across the gym, you will find more than enough to enjoy at every level.

A Day Pass at boulder+ would cost S$28, while a set of 10 Passes is S$200. For a full list of rates, such as for the parent-child pass, refer here.

4. Boulder Movement

Rock climbing gyms Singapore - Boulder Movement Bugis

With four locations, Boulder Movement is a popular choice for climbers looking for variety and convenience. Their gyms are located at Bugis+, Tekka Place, Downtown Gallery, and 18 Tai Seng, which are pretty central areas in Singapore.

These bouldering-only gyms cater to all levels, making it easy for beginners to start and for experienced climbers to find a challenge. The atmosphere in Boulder Movement gyms is welcoming, with a focus on building a supportive community. They offer an Intro to Bouldering class that teaches the basics of bouldering and introduces climbers to proper techniques and safety practices.

For those seeking a more in-depth introduction, their beginner boot camps are great for a full-body workout while learning essential climbing skills. These boot camps provide personalised guidance in a small group setting, helping newcomers build strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Boulder Movement offers a single entry pass (S$35, off-peak at S$20), as well as shareable multipasses, allowing climbers to book sessions at any of their gyms. Their 5x Entry Passes are priced at S$145 while 10x is S$207. First-timers also get complimentary shoe rental.

Most of Boulder Movement’s gyms are smaller & cosy, but its biggest Rochor outlet at Tekka Place is quite sizeable. Definitely consider visiting it if you’re looking for a wider variety of problems & challenges.

5. Kinetics Climbing

Kinetics Climbing offers a more affordable bouldering experience, but do not underestimate the climbs here. There is a reason why it is considered one of the “OG” bouldering gyms in Singapore and has a high 4.9-star rating on Google with 1.2k reviews.

While the facilities are smaller compared to most climbing gyms on this list, there are challenging boulder problems that will keep you engaged for hours.

With a single entry pass at S$23 (off-peak S$16.50), you can go for a climbing session here without breaking the bank. For those looking to climb more frequently, you can get 5 Passes for S$100 or 10 Passes for S$185, both of which can be shared with friends, making it a flexible and cost-effective option.

Kinetics Climbing also has a comprehensive and extensive range of courses, including the Singapore National Climbing Standards (SNCS) certification course. The SNCS Level 1 course teaches essential skills like safe belaying, equipment knowledge, and basic climbing techniques, making it ideal for new climbers. The gym also has classes for kids who are keen to learn bouldering and provides a friendly environment for it.

If you are looking to buy new gear such as climbing shoes, there is also a shop tucked in a corner that you can explore. In fact, I bought my last 2 pairs of climbing shoes in this shop because the models I wanted could only be found here. Make sure to keep a lookout for any discounts & offers that they have too.

Lighthouse Climbing offers a community-focused approach to bouldering, which is reflected in its crowdfunded origins. In fact, it’s Singapore’s first crowdfunded climbing gym. Located at Pasir Panjang, this gym features up to 280 square metres of climbing walls.

The gym also features a fully adjustable Kilter Board, which uses an app and LED light system to create custom routes with varying wall angles, catering to a wide range of climbing abilities. It’s a versatile training tool that allows climbers to practise on adjustable angles of 0 to 70 degrees, adding a unique dimension to the experience.

Lighthouse Climbing offers day passes and shareable Multipasses, making it easy for climbers to enjoy their facilities on their own terms. Their Day Pass for adults costs S$28. But, they also provide discounted rates for senior citizens, youth, and children, making it an inclusive environment for climbers of all ages.

The 5x Day Pass is priced at S$120, while the 10x Day Pass costs S$220.

8. Climb Central

Climb Central is probably Singapore’s most recognisable climbing facility. You’ve most likely noticed climbers scaling their towering walls while you were shopping at Funan or Kallang Wave Mall. But that is only 2 of their locations. Climb Central can also be found at Novena Square and SAFRA Choa Chu Kang.

Though they are mostly known for high-wall rock climbing, Climb Central actually also has small bouldering sections. For the high walls, there are options for auto-belay, top-rope or lead climbing. Of course, you would need the relevant certifications, which you can also attain at Climb Central

First-timers can opt for an Adult Entry Set at S$38.15, which includes registration fees and all equipment rentals for the day. Standard entry rates are S$27.25, not including equipment rental. There are also sets for youths and families, and multi-pass options. Check out the full list of rates here

If you are looking for beginner-friendly high walls to conquer and don’t mind doing so in a nice public environment, visit Climb Central.

9. fit bloc

If you’re looking for more than just a regular climb session, but a full workout day, fit bloc might just be the right gym for you. With 2 locations located quite close to each other near the southern part of Singapore, this is the gym to visit if you study or work in the area.

I’ve personally only visited fit bloc Kent Ridge, which is the bigger facility compared to its Depot Heights counterpart. At the Kent Ridge gym, you can find both large climbing walls and fully-fitted gym rooms.

At the climbing areas, you can try out a variety of challenging bouldering problems and high-wall rock climbing. In the gym areas, you can build up your fitness with equipment like treadmills, weights and spin bikes. There is even a swimming pool available at fit bloc Kent Ridge. There are also co-working spaces for you to do work between your climbs & workouts.

First-timers here should definitely get the S$50 3-Pass Bundle that includes complimentary shoe & harness rental. Standard single entry costs S$28 and gives you access to both fit bloc outlets. 10 Facilities Passes cost S$190. And yes, if you’re wondering, all entry passes give you access to every part of the facility, including the gym and pool at Kent Ridge. If you’re just visiting for a swim, you can choose to purchase a Pool Entry at S$10.

Similar to fit bloc, Ark Bloc provides a bouldering and fitness experience, but with a focus on calisthenics and strongman workouts. If you’re looking for a place to flip Tyres and lift Atlas Stones, you have all you need right here. The gym is fully sheltered but outdoors, meaning there is no air-conditioning. There are big fans though, which can help cool you down between workouts. If you enjoy sweating it out while exercising, this environment would be great for you.

Ark Bloc is located at the Punggol area in the north-east of Singapore, and is quite a big space for climbers and gym-goers. A Single Day Pass is S$28, while a 3x Multipass is S$58. These are not shareable. The 10x Multipass, however, is shareable and is priced at an affordable S$168.

Drop by Ark Bloc if you’d like to try climbing with a change of view.
