The founder of Fatty Cheong Char Siew and Wanton Noodles, Chan Tuck Cheong, has passed away at the age of 58 from pancreatic cancer. The news was shared by his son, Lachlan Chan, in a heartfelt message on Facebook.

Anyone who frequents ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre would be familiar with his stall. Fatty Cheong sports long queues every day for its “bu jian tian” (“doesn’t see the sky”) char siew, an extremely tender cut of pork from the armpit of the pig.

With over 34 years of experience in roasting char siew, it’s no surprise that his char siew has been described as some of the best around.

The name of his stall was derived from his childhood nickname as he was obese when he was younger. He considered this nickname friendly, and easy to remember. He didn’t just make char siew, either – he also had a zi char stall selling Cantonese food, and personally helmed the kitchen there.

Tuck Cheong was described as a generous and good-hearted person. He was also a lion dance coach and martial arts pugilist. Fatty Cheong’s passing was a shock to many; tributes and condolences poured in across social media. Many were also recounting how much they loved his food. Both of Tuck Cheong’s sons have been training to take over the business, and we wish them the best.

For those who wish to pay their respects, Tuck Cheong’s wake details are as follows: The wake will be held from Oct 20 to Oct 24 at Block 575A Woodlands Drive 16. The funeral cortege will depart for Mandai Crematorium Hall 03 on Oct 24 at 2.45pm, and the cremation is scheduled at 4.30pm.
