Free chicken neck as a gift? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what a woman found in her chicken rice order.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, 70-year-old Mdm Zhuang had visited Ah Five Hainanese Chicken Rice at Ang Mo Kio Block 158 at around noon on 23 Feb. She then bought a box of chicken drumstick rice for S$6.50, which she brought home for her husband’s lunch.
Busying herself with the household chores, she paid little notice to the food after reaching home. It was only after her husband had finished eating the chicken rice that she noticed the unsightly pile of bones left in the container, which was puzzling given that she ordered only chicken drumsticks.
Mdm Zhuang also emphasised that her husband usually eats anything she buys him, as he isn’t a picky eater. However, he was put off by the absurd amount of bones and even told her not to buy from the stall again.
Upset, she immediately returned to the stall with the box to complain to the vendor, who told her the bones were free chicken necks given out of generosity. The vendor even offered to refund the full amount to her as compensation, but she refused to accept it.
Mdm Zhuang previous orders of chicken drumstick rice had never come with chicken neck and she was shocked the stall would add it without asking. She suspects that there had not been enough drumstick meat and that the vendor was trying to cheat her.
Denying the accusations, the vendor clarified she uses chicken neck, feet and butt to boil the soup for orders. Since these parts are popular with customers, she sometimes packs them randomly as complimentary gifts alongside the usual serving of meat. This was the first time in the stall’s more than 3 years of operation that she encountered any problems regarding the add-ons, but she decided not to take it to heart.
