You read that right. RAPPU-giri, Singapore’s first sushi seaweed burger joint, will be a pop-up every Friday and Saturday from 16 May to 5 July, located in Stay Gold Flamingo along Amoy Street. This fresh concept was founded by RAPPU, an O.G. handroll bar in Singapore.

RAPPU-giri - overview of food

Now, imagine digging into a hearty burger, except the buns are replaced with (almost) every Asian’s favourite carb, rice. These crispy, charred rice buns are lined with top-grade seaweed and are packed with bold, addictive flavours tailored to the local palate.

Out of the 11 flavours, I opted for 4 that ranged in price point and taste profiles.

RAPPU-giri - spam & egg + chicken nanban

Starting with the cheapest on the menu, we have the Spam & Egg (S$8) (above, left). Definitely a safe choice for kids or those who wish to enjoy a budget-friendly meal. I especially liked the addition of pariko zuke (pickled cucumber), which offered a salted and tangy twist to this savoury treat.

Would you look at that! The Chicken Nanban (S$12) (above, right) is an indulgent choice, featuring a juicy tempura-battered chicken thigh and a special curry egg mayo sauce that was inspired by one of the owner’s trips to Japan. Although packed with a rich flavour, it can get a bit jelak after a while.

RAPPU-giri - salmon mentaiko + unagi

Working our way up the price list is the Salmon Mentaiko (S$14) (left), featuring fresh salmon sashimi slices as the star of the dish. Paired with the gorgeously orange-y mentaiko mayo sauce, I foresee this umami-filled dish to be a hot hit amongst customers!

Lastly, the crème de la crème, say hello to RAPPU-giri’s premium Unagi (S$20) (right) sushi burger. It holds the title of “most expensive on the menu”, but it was my favourite by a long shot. The tender, fleshy unagi was fresh and coated in an umami-packed yet slightly sweet sauce. Paired with the crispy rice, this combination was simply chef’s kiss.

Complete your meal with their Fizzes (S$12) or Cocktails (S$22) Bundle that comes with a portion of well-seasoned, crunchy fries and a choice of Truffle Nori, Curry or Wasabi mayo. Alternatively, fries and sauces are available a la carte at S$4.50 and S$2.50 respectively.

RAPPU giri - drinks

Calling all my strawberry matcha lovers, because I’ve found the perfect cocktail for you — the Rapp-mingo Gin Fizz (S$18) (left). It is an easy one to drink, with decently light and fruity notes. A refreshingly sweet non-alcoholic option would be the Kyoho Calpis (S$8) (right), which is creamy with a slight tanginess from the yoghurt.

RAPPU-giri will be giving out FREE sushi burgers (1 per pax) on their opening day (16 May), from 11.30am till sold out, so be sure to head down early. Don’t say I bojio!
