Lanterns, family time and plenty of excuses to eat dessert — Mid-Autumn 2025 is right around the corner, and that means mooncake-hunting season in JB is officially here. From traditional baked mooncakes with velvety lotus paste and flaky Teochew pastries, to decadent snowskin and modern creations with mochi and indulgent fillings, Johor Bahru’s bakeries and cafes are pulling out all the stops to sweeten the festival.
Whether you’re after a gift-worthy box set or just treating your loved ones (or yourself), we’ve got you covered. Here are 10 best mooncakes in JB to light up your Mid-Autumn.
1. Tong Ah Bakery

It’s hard not to crave a good mooncake whenever Mid-Autumn rolls around — and Tong Ah Bakery has plenty worth reaching for.

Established in 1952, this JB name has grown from a humble neighbourhood bakery into a halal-certified household brand. Their signature 鄉月™ mooncake line is a festive favourite among Johoreans, crafted with premium ingredients in flavours that suit both traditional and modern fancies — all gentle on the wallet, too.

Early birds, take note: Tong Ah’s Teochew Yam series is one you’ll want to make a beeline for. Freshly fried every morning and usually snatched up within hours, these JB-exclusive bestsellers are flaky, thousand-layered treats beloved by Singaporean fans.
The Less Sugar Teochew Yam (RM22 per piece) wraps luscious yam paste in a golden pastry for a comforting bite. For something more indulgent, the Less Sugar Teochew Yam with Yolk (RM24) balances its milky light sweetness with a savoury salted centre. And if you’re after a chewy twist, the Taro Muah Chee (RM23) is a non-fried treat that pulls apart to reveal a stretchy mochi core — a pleasant surprise beneath its delicate layers.

That aside, their mooncakes come in flexible Build Your Own Boxes (2pc from RM39, 4pc from RM92, 6pc from RM123), letting you mix and match for a perfect spread.

If there’s one classic you won’t go wrong with, it’s the Less Sugar White Lotus (RM22.50 per piece).
True to the brand’s motto: 好莲子,才有好莲蓉 (good lotus seeds make for good lotus paste), their signature lotus paste is made with super fine grade lotus seeds. Sure enough, it’s silky smooth, delicately sweet and nutty without ever feeling cloying. With 40% less sugar, this is one thoughtful pick that’ll impress your family.
Other traditional picks worth a try include the Less Sugar White Lotus Double Yolk (RM26), pandan-scented Less Sugar Golden Jade (RM22.50) and the Shanghai Golden Salted Egg Custard (RM26) encased in flaky pastry.

Fancy a modern spin? Tong Ah’s colourful Momoyama series swaps the traditional baked crust for a silky skin with a firm bite. Embossed with lotus blooms and traditional Chinese motifs, they’re as eye-catching on the table as they are delightful to eat.

The Momoyama Charcoal Oolong with Wumeizi (RM25.50 per piece) is a must-try. Infused with earthy oolong, this jet-black beauty hides velvety paste studded with crunchy melon seeds and tart preserved plums.
Pretty in pink is the Momoyama Red Dates & Longan (RM27), which emerged an unexpected favourite of mine. The duo comes together for a honeyed, fruity sweetness that plays beautifully against its chewy pastel skin.
Another standout is the Momoyama Pistachio Green Tea (RM32), a lilac-hued treasure where fragrant green tea paste meets nutty pistachio bits. A solid pick for those seeking a refreshing contemporary edge!

Now, enter the crown jewel: Tong Ah’s Snow Skin Musang King (RM48 per piece, RM182 for 4, RM258 for 6 + Cooler Bag for every 4 pieces). Wrapped in pillowy-soft snow skin, this treat reveals a golden heart of pure Musang King durian. It’s unapologetically rich and creamy — a decadent treat any durian lover will swoon over.
For snow skin stans (myself included), other chilled delights you’ll want to add to your 2025 JB mooncake repertoire include the Matcha with Red Bean Mochi (RM23) and Purple Taro with Red Bean Mochi (RM23), which layer a chewy mochi surprise with green tea and creamy taro respectively.

Beyond the flavours, Tong Ah’s mooncakes are dolled up in elegant packaging that’s perfect for gifting, or even treating yourself if you want to savour the season in style.
From timeless classics to modern creations, there’s a mooncake for every palate — at affordable prices no less! Plus, for every RM200 spent, you’ll get to try your luck at their festive gachapon for a chance to win instant cash (RM100, RM50) or a free mooncake of your choice.

2. THE LAPISERIE
If you’ve had your fill of the same old lotus and snowskin mooncakes, THE LAPISERIE has just the treat to shake up your Mid-Autumn: lapis mooncakes! A first in JB, this festive twist comes with the opening of their very first live-baking Atelier at Komtar JBCC — just a stone’s throw from the checkpoint. Here, you can watch every buttery layer of the boutique bakery’s artisanal kek lapis being hand-crafted in real time.

Helmed by second-generation baker Cheng, whose wealth of experience includes stints at Wu Pao Chun and Mandarin Oriental, THE LAPISERIE draws from over 5 decades of cherished family recipes while marrying traditional techniques with modern finesse.
With buttery-soft layers and indulgent flavours spanning from classics like Prune and Pandan to daring options like Parmesan Cheese and Hazelnut Nutella, it’s no surprise their signature lapis has steadily become a local favourite. And get this: they even boast a glowing 5-star rating across nearly 600 Google reviews (at time of writing).

This Mid-Autumn, the bakery raises the bar with its limited-edition Lapis Mooncake Set (4 flavours), going at RM118 — or RM108 if you place your order before 21 Sep. What’s more, only 200 sets will be released, so don’t snooze if you want to ring in the season in style. Not convinced? We’ll show you what’s in store.
First up, the Pandan lapis mooncake is a faultless treat, its delicate green layers perfumed with the familiar sweet-grassy aroma of pandan. Soft and balanced with a gentle fragrant lift, it captures the essence of the local classic to a tee: nostalgic and endlessly easy to love.

If you’re a coffee-holic or just love your sweet treats with a little edge, the Coffee mooncake will be right up your alley. Like a shot of espresso, it leans bold and aromatic, delivering a roasty nuance that cuts through the cake’s richness before easing into a mellow, lingering sweetness.
Then there’s the Earl Grey mooncake, which turned out to be my favourite of the lot. Infused with the tea’s signature bergamot, its layers carry a bright citrusy lift that pairs beautifully with the dense, buttery crumb. Light, fresh and refined, this dainty flavour feels like afternoon tea reimagined for Mid-Autumn.
Finally, you can’t go wrong with the flavour that started it all: the Classic. This timeless creation leans on caramelised warmth with hints of cinnamon, letting its craftsmanship shine through in every intricate layer. Sometimes, simple really does say it best.

Beyond the mooncakes, THE LAPISERIE’s festive line-up also features Taiwan-style Salted Yolk Pastries (RM72). These pastry mooncakes star layers of flaky crust giving way to smooth lotus paste and a whole salted egg yolk at its core — savoury and satisfying all at once.
For something a little more bite-sized, how about a bottle of their Salted Egg Cookies (RM32)? Dusted with delicious salted egg umami and aromatic notes of spice, these crunchy nibbles are perfect for sharing or perhaps solo-snacking in front of the TV.

Heading down in person? You’ll find even more to explore at THE LAPISERIE Atelier — now home to the widest range of lapis in JB, thanks to new flavours like Cranberry and Cempedak.
And if you needed another reason to swing by: flash this article to score a free slice of their Classic Lapis. Be sure to swing by soon, as this delicious offer will only be available in Sep, and is limited to the first 20 redemptions a day. Consider it a little teaser before you bring home your own Mid-Autumn haul!

4. Yi Jia Pastry House

Think traditional mooncakes can’t surprise you anymore? Yi Jia Pastry House begs to differ. This family-run bakery in Muar has been gracing festive tables for over 20 years with a plethora of handmade classics, indulgent double-delight mooncakes and Teochew flaky pastries.
Built on a legacy of family recipes and artisanal expertise, they know how to balance tradition with fun little twists. The same care that’s made their Lunar New Year cookies a hit across generations shows up in every Mid-Autumn creation — all crafted with premium ingredients and time-honoured techniques.

Yi Jia’s mooncakes come in a spectrum of box sets — from the dainty 2-piece Dreamy Moon (RM51.60) to the generous 8-piece Perfect Moon — dressed in elegant packaging made for gifting. Each set features a curated mix of flavours, so you’ll find something to match any craving or occasion. Browse the full collection here!
A standout this year is the Reunion Moon Gift Set, packing 8 mini mooncakes in flavours like Matcha Red Bean, Tiramisu and Salted Choc Lava — the latter three starring in their all-new Double Layer mooncake series. Each of these see the brand’s new-style baked skin fun filling combinations for maximum indulgence. And psst… There’s even a decadent Choc Pistachio Kunafa Mooncake.

For the best of their offerings to add to your JB Mooncake 2025 collection, look no further than their Premium Mooncake Series. Crafted with 100% pure lotus paste, these creations are smooth and less sweet, some layered with double or triple fillings for that extra element of surprise.
Coconut lovers, meet the Tropical Emerald Premium Mooncake, where pandan lotus paste and fragrant Thai coconut shreds create a breezy Nanyang-style treat that’s aromatic and refreshing. For a chewy contrast, the Violet Harmony, Matcha Red Bean and Black Sesame Omochi respectively marry purple and golden sweet potato, earthy Uji matcha and silky red bean, and nutty black sesame with a soft mochi core that’s utterly addictive.
Now, I’m sure durian devotees need no convincing; the Musang King steals the show with a gooey lava centre brimming with 60% pure Musang King flesh.

For something you won’t easily find elsewhere, Yi Jia’s Handmade Teochew Lao Piah Series is a real gem. Known for its painstakingly hand-rolled thousand-layer pastry, each piece shatters into crisp, buttery flakes on first bite. It’s no wonder these treasures are regular Mid-Autumn best-sellers.
Keep things classic with the Lotus Lao Piah, offering the familiar comfort of smooth lotus paste wrapped in that impossibly light pastry. Equally satisfying is the Red Bean Lao Piah bringing a gentle, earthy sweetness to the mix. Can’t decide? Enter the Red Bean with Lotus Lao Piah.
And don’t miss the crowd-favourite Lotus with Salted Egg Lao Piah. Contrasting the sweet lotus paste against savoury egg yolk, this top-seller hits that salty-sweet spot head-on.

Of course, no Mid-Autumn spread is complete without the tried-and-true Traditional Mooncake Series. Classics like the Lotus Mung Bean Mooncake, Pandan Lotus Mung Bean Single Yolk and Yam showcase the flavours that have kept Yi Jia at the top of their game for decades.

Tucked away in Taman Johor Jaya, Ming Chuang Bakery is the kind of old-school neighbourhood bakery that locals have cherished for generations. Known for its traditional bakes and no-frills charm, it continues to be a go-to spot during 2025’s Mid-Autumn Festival for those looking for mooncakes in JB.

The Red Bean Paste (RM13.70) offers nostalgic simplicity, whereas the Durian Mooncake (RM18.50) packs a punch for durian devotees. 7. Yu Kong Mooncake

Yu Kong Mooncake may be best known for its roasted meats, but during the JB Mooncake 2025 season, this Johor Bahru favourite turns its attention to Shanghai-style mooncakes. Unlike the glossy Cantonese bakes, these are distinguished by a buttery, milk-scented crust that gives way to generously filled centres.

Their festive offerings are neatly packaged in boxes weighing 1.5kg each. The Four Flavours Box (RM52.50) presents a quartet of classics: lotus seed paste, white lotus, red bean, and emerald green. For those who prefer a savoury counterpoint, the Four Flavours Single Yolk Box (RM58.50) adds salted egg yolks to the same fillings.
As these mooncakes are only made during the Mid-Autumn Festival, advance orders are strongly recommended — a once-a-year indulgence worth securing before they’re gone.

For 2025’s mooncake hunting in JB, their Shanghai Mooncake Set (RM89 for 6 pcs) is the perfect choice. Flavours range from the sun-kissed tang of Pineapple Yolk to the savoury-sweet surprise of Seaweed Chicken Floss Lotus Yolk.
There’s the bold nuttiness of Black Sesame Almond, the balanced harmony of Matcha Red Bean, and the classic-with-a-twist White Lotus Mochi, where chewy mochi hides within smooth lotus paste. Completing the set is the aromatic Pandan Lotus Yolk, a nod to Malaysian tradition.

For something more adventurous, the 3Q Mooncake Set (RM60 for 4 pcs) layers multiple flavours into one bite. The Red Romance pairs red bean with mochi and salted chicken floss, while Pandan Boogie combines jade-green lotus with savoury fillings. The Taro Moonchild blends yam with mochi and chicken floss for a rich, earthy profile, and the OG White Lotus keeps it classic for purists.
