Bukit Merah is home to multiple industrial buildings and offices, with cafeterias and eateries at every nook and cranny. Five Star Dim Sum has recently opened its third outlet at E-Centre @ Redhill, and it’s the ONLY branch where prices are nett, with no additional GST or service charge.

For those catching up with buddies over a glass of beer, this venue also offers outdoor seating, perfect for the occasion.

The establishment offers an impressive range of handcrafted HK-style dim sum — 39 varieties, to be exact. It’s time to shake off the notion that ‘dim sum should only be consumed at breakfast’, as it’s available all-day from 8am to 9pm.

Does the menu end there? Not even close! fans can look forward to over 70 choices ranging from noodle dishes and stir-fried meats to fish head steamboat and claypot specials.

If you’re feeling under the weather, Five Star Dim Sum even offers 12 heartwarming soups like Peanut Lotus Root Soup (S$5.80) and Herbal Black Chicken Soup (S$7). What don’t they have?

Crab fans, here’s a special promotion just for you! Five Star Dim Sum, Bukit Merah is currently offering 3 crabs for just S$50. Besides Chilli, Black Pepper, Salted Egg, and Steamed, you can also request the chef to prepare it for you in other flavours like Indonesian Curry (not on the menu).
What I tried at Five Star Dim Sum, Bukit Merah

I was lucky enough to witness the staff preparing my HK Crispy Shrimp Cheong Fun (S$5.50) from scratch right after I ordered — it doesn’t get fresher than that!

Slathered in a piquant soy-based gravy, the HK Crispy Shrimp Cheong Fun had an incredibly silky and soft skin, which unveiled a crispy beancurd skin roll that was filled with juicy pieces of shrimp.

The classics like the Steamed Prawn Siew Mai (S$5 for 4 pieces) and Crystal Steamed Shrimp Dumplings (S$5 for 3 pieces) were so plump and satisfying — good enough to hit the sweet spot.

Out of the 10 choices of congee, I chose the most decadent one — Ting Zai Congee (S$5.50). With an abundance of ingredients like shrimp, fish slices, cuttlefish, pork, century egg, and peanuts, every spoonful was a real treat. The congee was silky and smooth; just the way I like it.

Want a savoury treat? The Signature Big Bun (S$2.50), generously filled with chunks of pork and chives, will satisfy any avid pau lover. If you have a weakness for sweet fillings, then I recommend the Steamed Sesame Paste Buns (S$4.50) and HK Salted Egg Custard Buns (S$4.50).

The Sour Pickled Grilled Fish (S$18.80) has fresh, tender slices of fish paired with mustard greens, all drenched in a zesty, appetite-inducing broth. Complement it with a bowl of plain rice, and you’re all set!

I enjoyed every addictive spoonful of the Claypot Three Cup Chicken (S$12). The tender chicken had a caramelised coating with the aroma of nutty sesame oil, rice wine and herby basil leaves. For an extra depth of flavour, have it together with the garlic cloves.

One of my favourite dishes was the Crispy Fried Pork with Red Fermented Bean Curd (S$12). Each unctuous piece was shatteringly crispy with the umami flavour of the fermented bean curd coming right into play.

The Claypot Drunken Prawns (S$20) were fresh and coated in an addictively savoury sauce — so much so that I licked my fingers clean after peeling them.
Final thoughts

Five Star Dim Sum, Bukit Merah is armed with a menu big enough to keep everyone happily occupied. With sprawling zi char and dim sum offerings, decision fatigue is the only real challenge here.
I can picture myself heading down with a big appetite and zero plans to share.
