Muah chee fans, bad news: We will soon witness a further decline of the already dying traditional muah chee trade, with the closure of Hougang 6 Miles Famous Muah Chee in mid-May.

Mr and Mrs Teo, the couple behind the stall, announced in Mar that they would be closing their stall at Gourmet Paradise Food Court in Toa Payoh HDB Hub.

In an article by Zaobao, they revealed their plans to retire and enjoy their old age, discussing the difficulties of operating an F&B business in their later years. This is especially so with the long periods of standing and their insistence on hand-making their muah chee.

However, this closure means the vanishing of one of the last muah chee men, or perhaps the last one in Singapore.

Mr Teo entered the muah chee trade at 14 and is dedicated to making muah chee the traditional way. Instead of producing his muah chee at the factory and cutting it with scissors, Mr Teo handmakes his muah chee. He grinds the peanuts, beats the muah chee and shapes it by hand.

Although some may mourn the loss of this traditional muah chee stall, others may not feel as pained.

Netizens on Facebook mentioned that the stall’s muah chee is overpriced. Indeed, their muah chee (S$3 for small, S$4 for medium, S$6.50 for large) is more expensive than what you can find at other places. Some have also commented on the poor service of the stall owners.

Despite this, I would probably still drop by this muah chee stall over the next few days before they permanently close, because after all, I may never find the same taste in Singapore again once they’re gone for good.

I can't cook, but I can eat and tell you if the food is good. I love almost everything that goes with coriander, spring onions or vinegar, but absolutely hate ginger and garlic.
