Common JB workshop scams to know

While crossing the border can save you a significant amount of money, Singaporean drivers are occasionally seen as easy targets for shady mechanics in JB. Because you cannot just drive back the next day to complain, dishonest car workshops may try to squeeze extra cash from you before you head back across the Causeway.

Knowing what to look out for, and how to protect yourself, will keep your repair bill low and your car running smoothly.

1. The ‘Singapore premium’ price

The moment a shop sees a Singapore-registered plate (SG plate), the price of parts and labour magically goes up. They count on the fact that even with the inflated quote, the total bill will still look slightly cheaper than Singapore franchise dealer prices, so you won’t shop around.

2. The fault code scam

A mechanic hooks your car up to an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) scanner, shows you a long list of error codes and informs you that your engine or transmission is on the verge of death. In reality, while the diagnostic codes do pop up, many are harmless history codes or intentionally triggered by the mechanic unplugging a fuse or wire when you weren’t looking.

When you pick up your car, ask the mechanic to place all the old, worn-out parts that were replaced. Reputable workshops do this by default to prove the work was actually carried out. If a shop makes excuses about why they “already discarded” your old parts, it’s a massive red flag.

Again, you can add a message to the workshop stating that you want the old parts back when you receive the quote.

Rule 3: Cross-check part prices via mobile apps

Unsure if you are getting hit with the Singapore Premium bill? Use your phone to do a quick spot-check on Malaysian e-commerce platforms like Shopee Malaysia or Lazada Malaysia to see the retail price of the part being replaced. While workshops naturally mark up parts for profit, the price shouldn’t be several times the local retail rate.

Rule 4: Stay with the vehicle for quick diagnostic jobs

If you are visiting for a routine service, a wheel alignment or a quick diagnostic scan, stay in the workshop bay and watch the car. Mechanics are far less likely to intentionally unplug sensors, spray fake oil leaks on your suspension components or take shortcuts if the owner is actively observing.

Rule 5: Use authorised towing services only

If your car breaks down, do not accept help from random tow trucks that pull up on the highway. Instead, call your Singapore motor insurance 24-hour emergency hotline immediately. Most comprehensive Singapore car insurance policies provide cross-border towing support or can direct you to an authorised Malaysian partner.

JB Mechanic Guide: Are they worth it?

The short answer? Yes, but only if you play your cards right.

If you are crossing the Causeway solely for a basic oil change, the math just doesn’t add up. By the time you factor in the VEP (Vehicle Entry Permit) fee, toll charges, petrol and the hours of your life lost sitting in checkpoint traffic, you might actually end up in the red.
