JB dentist guide: Sink your teeth into savings across the border

You are probably among the almost 90% of Singaporeans who think dentists in Singapore charge way too much. To be fair, Singapore imposes rigorous dental standards and ensures compliance, which may be lacking in other countries. However, the gap seems to have narrowed recently, with many Singaporean dental patients very happy with both the cost and quality of care they receive from JB dentists.

After a colleague lamented the almost S$5,000 that she spent on root canal therapy here, we wondered how much cheaper it would have been across the border in Johor Bahru. Our research showed that the savings would have been significant, even at the most well-regarded dental clinics in JB.

The obvious downside, of course, is the travel time and hassle. If you are willing to overlook that, here are some of the dentists in JB we believe offer the best balance of cost and quality of care.

When creating this list of dental clinics in Johor Bahru, I based my choices on 3 core criteria:

• Proximity – They are limited to JB dentists within a 30min drive of the CIQ
• Clinical scope – These dentists offer a wide range of dental services, suited for a long-term relationship
• Key technology – These dental clinics use advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment for faster and safer dental care with shorter recovery time

Because dentistry is a regulated practice, we have limited inserting our own opinions into this article. Instead, the 3 factors listed above form the basis of our decision to include each one. A breakdown of general costs for each of the clinics can be found in the table at the end of the article.

1. IMC City Square Medical Centre

• Proximity: Ultra-Close (0 mins drive). Directly inside JB City Square mall, accessed via the connected walkway straight from the CIQ passport control.

• Patient Experience: High convenience and low transit friction. Best suited for day-trippers looking to combine a routine scale and polish with shopping or dining.

Are JB dentists cheaper than dentists in Singapore?

Yes. For the same level of care for the same procedure, a dentist in JB will charge approximately 30%-50% less than a Singapore dentist. Here is a simple guide to the costs of common dental procedures at the dental clinics featured on our list.

N.B.: Prices have been converted from MYR to SGD using the official exchange rate of 3.16 at time of writing, then rounded for simplicity. This table is a guide and actual costs will depend on the complexity of the patient’s case, as well as the choice of treatment and materials used.

You should also consider the time, effort and costs incurred when you travel to a dentist in JB instead of one in Singapore.

Which JB dentist should I choose for my treatment?

If speed and convenience matter most, IMC City Square Medical Centre makes the most sense for quick scaling, fillings or check-ups thanks to its direct CIQ access, while SG Dental Clinic JB and E&E Dental Surgery suit those wanting broader treatment options without straying far from the border. For lower-cost procedures such as root canals or crowns, Klinik Pergigian JDT Dental and Austin Dental Group sit at the sharper end of the price range.

If your needs are more specialised, JDental Specialists is better for paediatric and multi-disciplinary care, while The Smile Dental Lounge and Pink & White Dental are stronger fits for orthodontics, veneers and cosmetic work. The right choice depends on how you balance travel, budget and treatment complexity.
