In an interview with Ah Leng’s granddaughter in Oriental Daily, she shared that her grandfather first had no appetite to eat before developing a high fever on Christmas Day. Later, his condition took a turn for the worse where he was sent to the hospital and diagnosed with dengue fever.

Social media platforms have been flooded with messages and Facebook postings overflowing with words of solace, thanking him for his amazing cooking. Even former Finance Minister of Malaysia, Lim Guan Eng, shared his condolences: “Condolences on the sudden passing of 82-year Ah Leng, one of the top Penang char koay teow maestros. Sorely missed by your customers in your shop in Zoo Road. I will miss it too. Rest in peace.”
