China’s cult-favourite bakery Bao’s Pastry (鲍师傅) is officially making its way to Malaysia, with its first outlet set to open at Sunway Pyramid this December.
The bakery has built a huge following across China thanks to its signature Xiao Bei pastry, a soft, bite-sized sponge cake coated in creamy mayonnaise before being generously covered with savoury chicken floss and seaweed.
The sweet-and-savoury combination has made it one of the brand’s most recognisable creations, with other variations such as milk taro, chicken, and crab roe also gaining popularity over the years.
Some readers might be thinking, “Wasn’t there already a Bao’s Pastry in Petaling Street?” Well, you’re not alone. While there has been a bakery there selling Xiao Bei pastries for some time, it isn’t connected to the original Bao’s Pastry from China.
Similar versions of the viral treat have also become increasingly common at bakeries across Malaysia, but this upcoming launch marks the official arrival of the brand that helped put Xiao Bei on the map.
Of course, Xiao Bei isn’t the only reason people queue for Bao’s Pastry. The bakery is also known for a wide selection of pastries and baked treats, including Milk and Raisin Pastries, Cream Puffs, Crispy Golden Yolk Pastries, Hawthorn Soft Pastries, Milk Flavoured Taosu, and its Portuguese Egg Tarts, which come in flavours like classic, durian, and pistachio.
It’s still unclear whether the Malaysian outlet will debut with Bao’s Pastry’s complete menu, as the brand has yet to reveal the full lineup.
More details are expected closer to the opening of Bao’s Pastry in Malaysia, but if you’ve been curious about trying the original viral Xiao Bei from China, you won’t have to travel far for much longer.
