Psst, book lovers – I’ve got something for you. Do you want to know where you can get piles of books for as low as RM1 each? If that sounds too good to be true, rest assured, it’s real – BookXcess is preparing to close its KL East Mall outlet, and is having a massive clearance sale.

The clearance sale runs from 1 Mar to 31 Mar 2025, and there are extra discounts on books in the bestsellers category. Expect up to 40% off regular prices (excluding consignment books and goods), plus additional giveaways and freebies for purchases.

The news of the closure on BookXcess’s Instagram post was met with dismay from several of its customers. There were comments lamenting the closure, and asking why they were moving out. The response from BookXcess was “We are making room for a new shop being brought in by the mall”.

BookXcess is known for its steep discounts on brand-new surplus books from international publishers, spanning a large range of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and Malay publications.

In addition to being home to a large assortment of affordable books, each BookXcess outlet is known for having a unique aesthetic and layout. Each store is conceptually different from the other, with the REXKL outlet being a notable example. Occupying the former Rex Theatre, the REXKL outlet is done in a way that evokes the vibes of Petaling Street, with narrow alleyways and winding pathways.

Every outlet also includes an eatery or cafe on the premises. Another unique feature of BookXcess is a piano that anyone can use within each store.

While it’s unfortunate that the KL East Mall outlet has to close, book lovers can benefit from this to grow their book hoard. Truly bittersweet. If you want to check out BookXcess’s other outlets, head over to their website.
