Since the opening of Jewel Changi Airport in March 2019, the East has been a hotspot for Singaporean foodies. And there’s one restaurant opening we’ve all been waiting eagerly for; this establishment in question is none other than the famous UK chain, Burger & Lobster, now in Singapore.
After almost two months of waiting, the highly anticipated restaurant from London has finally opened its doors for Singaporeans.
The newest entrant to the 10-storey building sits on the highest floor in the serene Canopy Park.
With greenery at every corner we turned to, it didn’t feel like we were in a restaurant. The therapeutic roar of the Rain Vortex in the background made for quite a unique dining experience too.
Not only did the restaurant bring in members of staff from their London outlets, but they’ve also brought in their original menu.
I’m sure all of you have heard plenty about it by now, but Burger & Lobster’s Original Roll (S$40++) is a must-try.
It’s the one dish that my friends who’ve tried it overseas have been constantly raving about. You can imagine how much I was looking forward to tasting it myself.
The plump and juicy-looking chunks of chilled Atlantic lobster meat in the brioche roll were a sight to behold.
Glistening under the light, the lobster meat was indeed spectacularly juicy when I popped a piece into my mouth.
Prior to serving, they tossed it together with Japanese mayonnaise. This gave the lobster meat a slightly tangy flavour which complemented its natural sweetness really well.
They were incredibly generous with the lobster meat too, to our delight. It was almost spilling out from the bread roll.
The brioche roll might not look like much, but it was delicious and unlike anything we ever had.
Even though Burger & Lobster toasts it on both sides, the roll was pillowy soft.
It had a prominent buttery flavour which we simply couldn’t get enough of.
The warm toasted roll also made a good contrast with the cool and juicy lobster meat too.
Apparently, they bake the rolls in the restaurant daily so that they’re fresh. It’s no wonder they were so scrumptious!
But if the abundant lobster meat in the Original Roll isn’t enough to satisfy you, don’t worry. Burger & Lobster has an entire range of whole lobster dishes too.
From steamed to grilled, you can choose how you want your Original Lobster (S$65++) to be cooked.
For those of you who’re looking to taste the natural flavours of the lobster, I’d recommend going for the steamed version.
Steaming it retains all the lobster’s natural flavours, though the one we had was slightly overcooked and too rubbery for our liking.
On the other hand, if you love your lobsters with a more complex flavour profile, grilling it would be perfect.
The char from the grilling adds a smoky aftertaste to every bite.
But that’s not all, for Burger & Lobster has another alternative that’s more suited to us locals.
Chef Ajesh Gopi, the Franchise Executive Chef, wanted to curate a dish that would appeal to our Singaporean palates.
After much experimenting, he finally came up with the first-ever Sambal Glazed Lobster (S$65++).
This dish, true to its name, is unique to Singapore. You won’t be able to find it in any other Burger & Lobster restaurants as it’s a Singapore-exclusive.
I was afraid that the sambal would be overwhelmingly spicy. However, it turned out to be rather palatable.
There was a distinctively tangy yet decadent flavour of tomatoes. It instantly reminded me of one of our favourite national dishes, chilli crab!
I loved how the triad of flavours (sweet, sour and spicy) was in perfect balance. Not one was overpowering the other and, as a result, they came together nicely.
In true chilli crab style, the dish also came with two slices of their signature brioche bread.
We certainly wiped up all that delicious gravy, I’ll tell you that!
I’d say Chef Ajesh absolutely hit the nail on the head for this dish. I can’t wait to see what else he comes up with in the future using our Singaporean flavours. We heard a laksa creation’s on his list!
Since we were at Burger & Lobster, we had to give their burgers a try as well.
The Mayfair (S$25++) features pure Angus beef which comes all the way from Nebraska, USA.
Succulent and absolutely juicy, the grilled beef patty packed a ton of umami flavour.
Although the burger came with a variety of other fresh ingredients, the beef patty still outshone them all.
Like the brioche roll for their lobster roll, Burger & Lobster also makes the burger buns fresh.
They were remarkably firm on the outside, yet fluffy on the inside, making for satisfying big bites.
If you have room for desserts (why not?), Burger & Lobster offers an exquisite Tres Leches (S$12++).
The vanilla sponge cake, contrary to its appearance, was surprisingly light and airy.
We didn’t have to chew much, for it dissolved in our mouths effortlessly.
There was also a rich milky taste which I personally loved. Together with the other components, it made this unassuming cake simply irresistible.
If you’re a chocolate aficionado, make sure you give their Chocolate Jewels (S$12++) a try too.
The dark chocolate nuggets impressed us with its intense bitterness.
They also drizzled salted caramel sauce over the chocolates, giving every bite a strong caramel flavour.
To cleanse your palates after such a hearty meal, I’d recommend going for the Tropicana (S$8++).
With the zestiness from citrus fruits such as passionfruit, lime and orange, you can bet it’s super refreshing.
The addition of lemonade made the drink delightfully fizzy too!
For the coffee lovers out there, Burger & Lobster also serves up an impressive Espresso & Tonic (S$8++).
With espresso and lemon on the list of ingredients, it’s no surprise that I could taste both bitter and sour notes in every sip.
Burger & Lobster has definitely lived up to its hype, I’ll tell you that. With such an impressive lineup of dishes, I can definitely see myself returning, especially on special occasions.
That said, however, the restaurant doesn’t take reservations. So if you want to have a taste of their signature Atlantic lobsters, you’ll have to go down and queue!
