Riding on the K-Wave which has created a global phenomenon around the world, K-Food has also risen in fame with the increasing number of Korean restaurants opening up around our sunny island.
Unveiling the latest day-to-night Korean burger joint, Burger+ has opened its second installation at Clarke Quay Central serving up breakfast toast from 8am, and Korean gourmet burgers, chi-maek (beer and chicken pairing) and soju mixers till 3am.
Paying homage to the vibrant K-pop culture, the new Burger+ is decorated in stylish and swish interior oozing with retro disco vibes. As I stepped into the restaurant, I was immediately captivated by the colourful neon lights at the backdrop and the K-pop beats pumping in the stereo.
Blessed with a 200-seater space, Burger+’s fun and youthful environment make a swanky event space with its vibrant decorations and instagrammable spots. If only I could turn back time and re-celebrate my 21st birthday, this will be the perfect location!
Known for being ‘more than just a burger’, Burger+’s menu offerings are created by Co-Founder Lee Mihyun’s creative food inspirations from her Korean heritage. With 11 different burgers to pick from, I was spoilt for choice and had a tough time making a decision. Eventually, I went with the crowd’s favourite—Korean Bulgogi Burger (S$13.80) and the Avocado Fish Burger (S$10.90).
A classic Korean flair, the Korean Bulgogi Burger features Burger+’s house-made potato bun sandwiching a juicy, premium US-imported beef patty sizzled in special bulgogi glaze and topped with caramelised onions. Unlike the other burgers on their menu, I appreciated that this burger was not crazily packed with condiments, allowing me to really savour the sweetness of the bulgogi sauce together with the smoky beef patty.
Contrary to the Korean Bulgogi Burger, the Avocado Fish Burger (S$10.80) was overflowing with ingredients such as deep-fried dory, tomato slices, and a humongous chunk of fresh avocado. As satisfying as it looked, I had a hard time getting a mouthful of all the ingredients in a bite. This, however, did not deter me from savouring the entire burger as the dory was deep-fried to perfection.
The batter encasing the fish was not too thick and had an impeccable crunch. Inside, the dory was fresh, delicate and soft. It was seasoned very lightly with salt, resulting in a burger that was not too heavy in terms of taste.
The trip to Burger+ will not be complete without having to try their signature Yangnyeom Chicken (S$10.80 for three pieces of drumsticks). Doused generously with Burger+’s specially formulated B+ sauce and immediately cooked-to-order, a bite of this Yangnyeom Chicken instantly transported me back to Seoul, reminding me of the days I spent having chi-maek with my friends during my exchange program.
As red and fiery as it looks, the B+ sauce coating the entire drumstick was in fact, sweet and tangy, with no hint of spice. If you are looking for something with more heat that will leave you perspiring from head to toe, Hot Yangnyeom Chicken is the one you are looking for.
The party goes on as night falls. So why not get into the mood with Burger+’s self-brewed tap beers, bottled beers, cocktails and wines? Burger+’s speciality cocktails are served encased in square tubes, surrounded with dry ice. A visual that will not only excite but also keep you busy, taking photos for your Instagram posts!
