Coffee and toast is a quintessential combination in every Singaporean’s life. Be it for breakfast or as a mid-day snack, it is a convenient option many of us usually choose. Jazzing up our traditional Nanyang Coffee experience is a new kid on the block—Butter Bean, a brand new concept brought to us by the bakery giants, the BreadTalk Group.

Located in Funan Mall, Butter Bean will be unveiled to the public on 28 August 2020. Decked in a welcoming bright yellow featuring a ‘Cherry to Cup’ mural, the area comfortably seats up to 45 diners.

Seeking to appeal to the palate and lifestyle of the younger generation, Butter Bean’s contemporary menu takes a spin on well-loved local dishes and beverages.

The BBrûlée Kopi Latte ($3.20) and G.M. Kopi BBliss ($3.50) marriages both the new and old with the use of a custom blend of Arabica and Robusta beans brewed traditional kopi-style. Comprising of three distinct layers, the BBrûlée Kopi Latte features the eatery’s signature salted cream foam topped with torched sugar. G.M. Kopi BBliss, on the other hand, is an icy treat showcasing the deep flavours of gula melaka

Classic toasts have also taken a new look at Butter Bean. Presented as an inch-thick open-faced toast, there are eight vastly different flavours retailing from S$2 onwards. Satisfying your sweet-tooth is the PB&J, Milky Milo and BB’s Kaya and Butter. Say Cheese! and Omu Cheese are the savoury options for those watching your sugar intake.

With the addition of S$3, diners can make their toast a set meal alongside traditional half-boiled or Hanjuku-style eggs, and a regular cup of Nanyang-brewed Kopi or Teh. Feel free to top up S$0.50 or S$0.70 for an upsized beverage and their speciality drinks respectively.

If a slice of toast alone is not enough to fill you up, then opt for Butter Bean’s selection of sandwiches or especially curated mains.

Similar to Egg Stop, each Butter Toast Pocket (from S$4.20) comprises of a serving of omelette, sliced cheese, lettuce and a protein of your choice. The decedent sandwich is then drizzled with house-made curry, black pepper, garlic sesame or thousand island dressing to seal the deal.

Butter Bean’s mains showcases novel renditions of local favourites. The crowd-pleaser—Curry On Sunshine ($6.80)—offers the familiar taste of Singapore-style curry paired with crispy fried chicken thighs and creamy scrambled egg.

Elsewhere, there is the Hey You Hae Mee (S$6.80), an ingenious take on the classic prawn noodle served with braised chicken. This soupy and comforting dish is also crowned with crispy fried Dahfa dried fish bits for that added texture you will surely love.

Butter Bean is indeed a one-of-a-kind concept that will redefine traditional delights with brand new flavours. The store’s opening on a Friday will probably attract a sizable crowd eagerly waiting to have a taste of the dishes they have to offer. If you are planning a visit, do remember to adhere to social distancing rules!
