Too often, we have to report on hawker stalls closing permanently. Today, we are happy to share a happier story with you. This time, a business that was forced to shut in July has bounced back to life! The supremely popular hawker stall, China Street Fritters, has reopened in Telok Blangah after its closure on 3 Jul 2023.

China Street Fritters initially operated in Maxwell Food Centre, and in May 2023, they announced that they would have their last day of operations on 2 Jul 2023. The owners cited rising rental prices, health problems, an absence of a successor and the lack of appreciation from the younger crowd for traditional food items as the reason for their closure.

After trying to sell their business for S$1 million dollars, and later halving the price to S$500,000, they were still unable to find suitable buyers. It was reported that previous tentative handover arrangements fell through due to conflicting interests between the parties involved.

Thankfully, despite being unable to sell the business, the owners decided to continue honing it themselves.

You can now find the new China Street Fritters stall in a coffeeshop located within Blk 61 Telok Blangah Heights in the South side of the country. The stall opened officially on 3 Sep 2023, exactly 2 months after it closed.

Here, you can once again enjoy their delectable dishes, just at a slightly higher price point — after all, we are talking about recipes valued at a million dollars.
