What ruins your mornings? For many, it could be an alarm that failed its only function, but for residents that frequent Tampines Round Market & Food Centre, it was the unceremonious closure of their favourite hawker stall. On 3 Jul 2023, hungry patrons were left reeling at the sight of a shuttered Song Han Carrot Cake. Thankfully, it is set to reopen on 9 Aug.
The approximately 1-month closure was due to renovation works.
The stall is known for adding curry powder to their carrot cake, a bizarre recipe surely to those hearing it for the first time. While the curry powder isn’t overwhelming, both it and the turmeric are quite apparent scent-wise. The strange combination works as the spices complement the subtle sweetness of the tender slices of carrot cake and chai poh.

Sadly, Song Han Carrot Cake’s re-opening brings with it less inviting news with their price hike. Their fried white carrot cake and fried black carrot cake, formerly at a ridiculously affordable S$2, will now cost S$2.50 post-renovation. Similarly, other dishes across the board have been subjected to the same price hike. While certainly not ideal, their generous portions should still tide you over on a particularly ravenous day. Turning a profit with 2-dollar dishes would make for quite the impossible feat.
Their fried carrot cake with prawn (S$5.50 for 5pc, S$6.50 for 8pc) adds texture to the monotony of soft, chopped-up carrot cake with a fresh tinge of sweetness when you get to the individual prawn bits. Those truly indecisive can opt for black and white carrot cake (S$4.50) to cover their bases.
For a taste of their unique carrot cake imbued with curry powder, head down to Song Han Carrot Cake at Tampines Round Market & Food Centre after it reopens on 9 Aug.
