Choa Chu Kang is having a pasar malam from 8 to 28 Jun at Blk 355 Choa Chu Kang Central. It’s open from 12 to 10pm daily and you can find over 40 F&B stalls here. If you enjoy bopping to beats as you eats, visit between Fri and Sun and to enjoy live music as well!
When I heard the news, I recalled my previous visit to a pasar malam. As the experience was over 2 years ago, I didn’t remember much of it and wondered what to expect. I took the opportunity to visit Choa Chu Kang pasar malam on its first day and rediscover the experience.
Walking around the market, I was surprised to find more stalls offering international food than local delights. From Korean fried chicken to Turkish kebabs, the range of international cuisine was a pleasant surprise!

The first thing that caught my eye was the Fried Milk (S$5) from an unnamed Taiwanese stall.

The fried milk is presented as golden cubes and they aren’t too sweet even after the addition of a condensed milk topping. Each piece had a thin, crispy layer on the outside and a milky, pudding-like texture on the inside, which reminded me of Cantonese steamed milk egg pudding.

Next, I visited Bites Haven. A poster below their signboard recommended the Tornadog (S$6), which came in 3 flavours: Original, Spring Onions and Special. Since I was here for something unique, I decided to try the special flavour.
The snack was a stick with not 1 but 2 hotdogs! The hotdogs were trapped inside a long potato spiral seasoned with garlic, mayonnaise and nacho sauce. Even though I ate it some time after purchasing, the potato spiral remained crispy and delectable!

I also had lok lok from a stall called Thailand food. Each stick costs S$1.90, and we bought a sausage skewer along with enoki mushrooms wrapped in ham. There was also salad inside.

While I enjoyed the juicy sausage and sweet chilli sauce drizzled over the skewers, I wasn’t a fan of the enoki mushroom wrapped in ham. The mushroom was difficult to chew and got stuck in my teeth.
Finally, I tried a Quesillo (S$6) at a stall with the same name. The pudding was jiggly and drizzled with sweet caramel. It had a porous texture, which I learned is normal because Quesillo uses egg white, which traps air bubbles.

Although I appreciated the smooth, creamy texture of the dessert, I would have preferred it to be less sweet.
Did I enjoy my time at Choa Chu Kang pasar malam? Yes! The variety of food options exceeded expectations. In fact, it’s hard to find so many different cuisines all under the same roof.
The only thing I didn’t like was the lack of sheltered dining areas. Halfway through my meal, it began to rain, and the bench I was eating at was only partially sheltered. With the fully sheltered benches all occupied, I had to squeeze into the sheltered side of the bench. I was in a rush to get in on the first day but I recommend you check the weather forecast for the best day and time to visit.
Nevertheless, I had a positive experience at the pasar malam and recommend it for those seeking an experience of unique international fare.
