Popular tze char store in Kovan transforms into Davis Prawn Court, serving up delicious bowls of prawn noodles

Tucked in the heartlands of Singapore is Kovan 209 Market & Food Centre, a hawker centre that contains many different stalls that serve a great variety of delicious foods. Davis Prawn Court is one of them, and it occupies a unit that used to cook up a large spread of tze char dishes that served never-ending queues. Now newly refurbished and rebranded, Davis Prawn Court takes up the space where Teow Heng Cooked Food used to be— the economical rice that North-Easties previously raved about.

Teow Heng Cooked Food has fed many happy bellies for a long time, satisfying all generations with his delicious curry rice that offer a great array of wokhei-infused dishes. To our sad dismay, Teow Heng Cooked Food ended its lease at the end of 2021.

Surprisingly, netizens were put to a detective test, and they found out that the same cook that was occupying Davis Prawn Court was the same economical rice uncle that was spearheading the kitchen works at Teow Heng Cooked Food.

A Facebook post spurred some nostalgia amongst netizens when the news broke out. One comment even mentioned: “What a waste of his recipes and talents in all the dishes he used to cook… Missed his curry and sticky egg omelette”, and another assured that “this uncle really can cook”. One thing for sure, this uncle has amazing cooking skills.

Caught on camera: Economical rice uncle cooking up his new specialty— prawn noodles! He made a 180 degree change with the opening of Davis Prawn Court in Jan 2022. The rebranding was very shortly after the closure of Teow Heng Cooked Food, so uncle’s talents were not thrown to waste if usual patronisers tried out the new store.

The new store offers a long list of seafood noodle options. Obviously featuring the main ingredient, prawns, the stall owners cook them beautifully to pair with soup and dry options. Their signature is the Davis Prawn Noodles that go for S$4.80 for the small option and S$5.80 for the larger option. You can opt for your own choice of noodles there, such as yellow noodles, kway teow and thin bee hoon.

The Hokkien Prawn Noodles (S$5) was something that caught my attention. Just look at the wokhei and sear on this gorgeous plate and you’ll get what I mean! He provides a generous portion of pork lard as well to seal the deal in delivering a great plate of Hokkien mee.

Although there have been changes to the fare that the uncle has been making, I am sure his cooking standards remain with the glorious bowls of prawn noodles that he cooks up.
