Kinokuniya at Orchard’s downsizing was devastating news for many book lovers, but keep your chin up! The National Library Board (NLB) recently launched a science fiction and fantasy-themed pop-up library in Tampines, and it might just become your new go-to reading spot.

Launched on 23 Feb this year, the pop-up will be open until 22 Feb 2026. With a year to go, there’s plenty of time for interested bookworms to drop by before it’s gone. NLB says a possible extension will depend on public response and feedback, and updates will be given closer to the end date.

Located on Level 3 of the upgraded Tampines Changkat Community Club, this is the NLB’s first dedicated sci-fi and fantasy-themed pop-up library. It’s a haven for fans of the genre, boasting over 5,000 physical and eBooks. Traditional page-turners and scrollers alike are bound to be spoilt for choice with the many options they can access here.

Books are available in both English and Mother Tongue languages with 500 written in Mandarin, Tamil and Malay, meaning that anyone can immerse themselves in a good novel, regardless of their language. Additionally, books for adults and children alike are available, so people of all ages are welcome for a read.

Besides, who could say no to such a beautiful interior? NLB dubs this pop-up a gateway to imaginary and futuristic worlds, and it’s reflected in the breathtaking artwork that covers the walls.

To loan books, you’ll need to download the NLB Mobile app as it is completely self-service. Singaporeans are permitted to borrow up to 16 books and 16 eBooks each time, so go ham as long as you don’t exceed the limit. You’ll also require a library-compliant ID card such as a Student ID, Passion Card or NLB eCard which you’ll need to scan before entry.

Feeling intrigued already? Who knows, perhaps you’ll find your new favourite fantasy or sci-fi book at this new pop-up library in Tampines. Safe journey, travellers!

Singaporeans can now visit North Korea!
