It seems like Japan is one of the best places to work or study in for us Singaporeans. If you ever need a remedy for homesickness, there is a wide selection of our local fare to choose from for a taste of familiarity.
Adding on to that list is Bak Kut Teh Soba (JP¥590) at Fujisoba, a soba chain with several outlets across the country.
Fun fact as to how the dish was created: A group of colleagues from Fujisoba were having bak kut teh in Singapore after a night of drinking, and had the sudden realisation that the “heatiness” of the soup helped them to sweat out the hangover.
Guess you could say it soba-red them up.
Eating bak kut teh became a familiar routine for the group, and they decided to bring this newfound discovery back to Japan.
Even though they knew it might not appeal to the lighter taste buds of the people back home, they kept the signature peppery and garlic flavour in their Bak Kut Teh Soba. They decided to take out the star anise, though.
A bowl on its own is priced at JP¥590, and costs JP¥160 if you want to add on pork slices.
Judging from the abundance of pictures online, the dish seems to be a hit with the Japanese!
Maybe it’s time to jio your friends for some bak kut teh.
