Alex See, the man behind the legendary Geylang Lorong 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee stall has passed away. We understand that Mr See, 72 had been in poor health for several years and finally succumbed yesterday, 10 Nov 2022.
The sad news was announced on the Facebook page of Geylang Lorong 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee at around noon today. Their post quickly garnered scores of reactions as well as shares and expressions of condolences in the comments section.
Mr See’s illness had already seen him hand over cooking duties to his daughter, Penny. She and her husband have been doing the heavy lifting at the stall for years now, albeit initially under the very close supervision of Mr. See. He himself worked the wok on certain days.
We came across their famed wok hei-infused Hokkein Mee most recently at Shangri-La Hotel’s buffet at The Line restaurant. It was a poignant moment when we drew this photograph out from our archives— it was a reminder of our proximity to something that had been so carefully and skilfully created by a true craftsman.
True connoisseurs always mention that Mr. See’s Hokkien Mee was made the ‘authentic’ way, using a charcoal fire. Prices ranged from S$6 to S$25 and there was no shortage of takers, especially since their servings of prawns and squid were so generous.
According to the Facebook post announcing his passing, Mr. See’s wake will be held at the void deck of 870 Tampines Street 83. The cortège is scheduled to leave at 2.30pm on Monday, 14 Nov for Mandai Cremation Hall 4.
