Love pork dishes? Check out the new Golden Nagano Tomahawk Katsu Curry Don (S$28.80++) from Tanuki Raw.
The pork tomahawk is part of their new menu available at both Orchard Central and National Design Centre outlets, until the end of February 2019.
As a regular customer at Tanuki Raw, I had to give it a shot.
The don comes with a 300g bone-in pork rib, resting on Tanuki Raw’s signature fragrant mixed sesame rice. Marinated in beer to tenderise the meat, each bite of the pork melted in my mouth.
The slab of pork is then breaded with panko crumbs for a flaky and light crust. Deep fried until golden brown, the pork rib is also doused in a spicy red curry and a golden truffle sauce. The golden sauce is made from a mixture of soy sauce and wine, with an added shimmer from gold dust.
Accompanied by the truffle aroma, the subtly sweet red curry came with a spicy kick that lingered on my tongue. Unfortunately, the heat in my mouth increased with every mouthful and it overpowered the truffle flavour.
In addition, the finely-marbled Nagano pork was sweet with a good ratio of fats to lean meat. However, the fattiness of the pork and the amount of sauce made the dish very greasy and overwhelming.
I didn’t enjoy the combination of the two sauces, as the intense and distinct flavours didn’t go well together.
I would’ve have enjoyed the tender and juicy pork more on its own, especially since the thin layer of crust helped to seal in the natural sweetness of the Nagano pork.
Since 2019 is the Year of the Pig, look forward to other pork dishes from Tanuki Raw, like the Black Gold Double Prosperity Donburi (S$23.80++).
