As I got older in age, my eating habits changed and I started to appreciate herbal soups even more. When I discovered that Heng Heng Herbal Soup (兴兴老火汤) opened in Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 (my neighbourhood) in Mar 2023, I knew I had to give them a try.
Ever since my first encounter with their herbal soups, they have converted me into a loyal fan and I’m happy to share with you what I had.
The soup stall serves 5 different kinds of herbal stewed soup with no added MSG. You can even approach the staff for a free top-up of your soup if you hadn’t had enough.
Unlike other establishments which pre-portion their soups into individual bowls, the soups are contained in large metal pots and simmered in low heat.
I tried the Watercress Pork Ribs Soup (S$5) with Pumpkin Rice (+S$1) for the first time. Do note that they only serve this particular soup on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Watercress Pork Ribs Soup was probably one of the most flavourful versions that I’ve had in my life. It was well seasoned, concentrated and robust in taste.
The fall-off-the-bone pork ribs were incredibly soft and the fatty parts were satisfyingly creamy and delicious. The watercress wasn’t overcooked and was still slightly crunchy as well.
The Pumpkin Rice was addictively yummy. Although it just contained bits of pumpkin and dried shrimp, it was already good to eat on its own— this is proof that food can taste incredible even with simple ingredients.
The Ten Tonic Chicken Soup (S$6) was a test of their consistency since I tried it 2 weeks ago. I remembered being blown away when I drank it for the very first time. Would I be disappointed?
The soup contained a huge chicken drumstick. Despite the meat’s thickness, I could still chew on it with ease. The herbal flavours of the soup had also penetrated the meat well. Simply delicious!
As I scooped the soup’s contents up, I found bits of dang shen, red dates and goji berries inside. The soup itself was thick and flavourful, almost tasting like a delicious bowl of herbal bak kut teh. It looks like they’ve managed to maintain their standard.
I’ve also tried their other soups like the Gingko Pork Tripe Pepper Soup (S$5.50) and Lotus Root Pork Ribs Soup (S$5) and they were both awesome as well.
After having a little chat with the stall keepers, I found out that Heng Heng Herbal Soup actually has 3 other outlets in Singapore. Why did I discover them so late? Oh well, better late than never I guess.
Do let me know if you have better herbal soup recommendations in the comments, I would like to try them myself too!
