Heng Kee Lor Mee, a hawker stall with over 44 years of history located at Bendemeer Market & Food Centre, has permanently closed on 11 Jun 2023.

For the past 23 years, the stall had been operated by 2nd-gen siblings, with their 68-year-old elder brother leading the way. He stepped in to take over after their late mother’s unfortunate fall, which prevented her from continuing to cook. Subsequently, their father retired, and the siblings fully assumed control of the business.

Hawkers are unsung heroes, pouring their hearts and souls into their craft. Through relentless hard work in sweltering conditions, they sacrifice precious time with their families and often endure health challenges.

The stall commenced business at 6am and typically concluded by 10am. However, the day didn’t end there for them. They had to immediately begin preparations for the following day’s operations, which involved going to the market to source fresh ingredients and returning to the stall for cooking. The workload was immense, and the eldest brother, in particular, had to manage with only 5 hours of sleep each day.

As a result, his health had taken a toll and they made the decision to close down the stall and prioritise rest. The plan was difficult but necessary.

Heng Kee Lor Mee was a renowned stall in the food centre, famous for serving their flavourful bowls of lor mee topped with delectable fried pork belly instead of the typical fried fish or fish bits.

The sisters of Heng Kee Lor Mee have collaborated with Shi Nian (known for their pig trotter rice) which took over their stall on 19 Jun 2023. Now, a fresh group of 23-year-old hawkers manages the stall, with the sisters serving as consultants, providing guidance throughout the journey.

We at Sethlui.com sincerely wish for the swift recovery and restored good health of their elder brother.
