This hidden Penang curry mee spot in Singapore operates just 4 hours a day

Situated on the 5th floor of Far East Shopping Centre along Orchard Road is an under-the-radar eatery called Kangji Curry Mee. Having opened its doors on 14 Nov 2024, this makan spot serves Penang Curry Mee from Mondays to Saturdays, operating for just 4 hours a day (10.30am to 2.30pm).

But this place isn’t done for the day. It’s actually a dual concept and operates as Gai Inn Izakaya in the evenings till midnight, serving small dishes and drinks.

Kangji Curry Mee is setup by Chef Ah Kang, a native from Penang who refined his skills as an omakase chef, commuting back and forth from Johor to Singapore daily. The flavours of his hometown held a special place in his heart, especially a curry mee stall he visited up to 5 times weekly.

Chef Kang cultivated a strong bond with the elderly owner of the curry mee stall in Penang, sharing bowls of noodles while conversing in Hokkien. Upon learning that the owner planned to close his stall after his wife’s passing, Chef Kang persuaded him to impart his craft, ensuring that the traditional flavours he loved would never be forgotten.

Chef Kang has opened 2 curry mee stalls in Malaysia and with Kangji Curry Mee, he brings his passion for authentic Penang flavours to Singapore. The rich, robust broth is made with a combination of homemade chilli paste and fresh coconut milk.

The Signature Curry Mee (S$9.90) gives you a choice of yellow noodles, bee hoon, mee kia or thick bee hoon to be doused in curry. It’s then topped with Thai-style crispy pork that adds a lovely crunch to every bite, complemented by slices of fish cake, egg, tau pok and fried pork skin.

There’s also a Dry Curry Mee Special (S$5.90) where the noodles are tossed in homemade dark soy sauce, then layered with a luxurious curry. The dish is finished with Thai crispy pork, egg wontons and fish cake slices.

For the ultimate indulgence, spoil yourself with the Jumbo Curry Mee (S$19.90), an opulent bowl consisting of the same ingredients from the Signature Curry Mee, but supersized with prawns, squid and cockles. The result? A lip-smacking savoury, umami and crunchy experience!
