You’ve probably heard of the super popular scrambled egg rice stall in Maxwell, Danlao, which quickly garnered great success just a few months after opening. I’d never tried Danlao for myself, and I wanted to know what the hype was with scrambled egg rice. Hence, I decided to pay Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice 高文滑蛋饭 a visit.

Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice - storefront

Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice is a stall within Kovan 209 Market & Food Centre, specialising in — you guessed it — scrambled egg rice. Similar to Danlao, the stall’s menu consists of rice bowls topped with scrambled eggs and an assortment of ingredients, ranging from mala pork to oysters.

As I’d never had scrambled egg rice before, I was excited to give the dishes a try and see what all the hype was about. With 9 kinds of bowls to pick from, I was spoiled for choice!

What I tried at Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice

Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice - chicken

I first opted for the most classic option, the Chicken Cutlet (S$5.80). The bowl of scrambled egg rice came topped with cut pieces of fried chicken cutlet and a drizzle of sweet brown sauce that tasted like teriyaki.

The flesh of the chicken cutlet was tender and juicy, while the skin was pretty crisp. However, I found that the chicken had an overly salty and briny flavour, which made it a little too strong for my liking. Perhaps those who enjoy very salty profiles will appreciate this more than I did.

The standout element of the dish was undoubtedly the scrambled egg. It was incredibly silky and moist, with a light and fluffy texture. Compared to the Western-style scrambled eggs typically found in breakfast platters, these scrambled eggs were a little sweeter and way more airy. I couldn’t get enough!

I especially liked how the eggs were flavourful on their own, yet not too overwhelming, hence complementing the white rice and salty chicken nicely. The price was relatively reasonable, too.

Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice - mala pork

I moved on to the Mala Pork (S$6) which was topped with a generous amount of stir-fried pork. There were chopped white onions, spring onions and chilli seeds scattered among the sliced pork meat, too.

Of the 2 dishes I ordered, I definitely preferred the Mala Pork variety. Each pork slice was tender and not tough at all. The mala taste was pretty evident and the pork had a fragrant, slightly sweet undertone to it. The stir-fried white onions gave the dish a bit of added crunch, making the dish all the more pleasant.

Like the previous dish, the scrambled eggs in this bowl were heavenly, and paired perfectly with the firmer texture of the pork.

However, my gripe with the Mala Pork was that it was very oily— the rice beneath had become soaked with so much oil that the bowl quickly became a little too jelak. I would definitely have preferred for the dish as a whole to be less oily, as that did make it a bit hard to finish the whole bowl.

Final thoughts

Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice - dishes

While the scrambled eggs from Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice were divine, the protein toppings unfortunately fell a little short of expectations. The Chicken Cutlet was just too salty for me while the Mala Pork was far too oily.

Regardless, I enjoyed my meal here, and I commend the stall for its flavourful dishes and unique concept. Not many hawker stalls in Singapore specialise in scrambled egg rice, after all.

Despite my gripes with certain elements, I would love to return to try their other options. Do keep an eye out for this stall the next time you’re in Kovan, and I can’t wait to see how it improves in the future!
