First dibs: Little Miss Coconut, Admiralty — “Has to do better than watered-down shakes”

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SETHLUI.com, home of coconut shake enthusiasts. It’s been a month since our last coconut shake review for Colico., but the craze definitely hasn’t died down. I’m still on my mission to see if there’s any stall that can offer a coconut shake magnificent enough to dethrone Mr Coconut, and today, I found myself at Admiralty MRT, placing an order at Little Miss Coconut.

Oh, and just a heads up—Little Miss Coconut and Mr Coconut aren’t related.

Little Miss Coconut split their menu into three main categories: Classic Shake, Premium Shake, and Coconut Milk, available in Regular or Large sizes. My go-to order (and by go-to, I mean the only thing I order) has and always will be, a simple coconut shake with no toppings, and that’s what I tried first. If I had to describe the Original Coconut Shake (S$4.30+), it would be the “Walmart VS Chanel” meme, where this was Walmart but worse. I was expecting an ice-cold wave of creamy sweetness filled with refreshing and chewy coconut flesh, but this drink tasted like the diluted polar opposite of my description. Hard pass.

Little Miss Coconut also has a line of Coconut Milk. I love both taro and coconut drinks unconditionally, and hoped that the Taro Coconut Milk (S$4.80) would marry my two favourites well, but this fell short of all my expectations—it tasted like there was more water in this coconut milk than there is in my daily intake, and left behind a residual sweetness that made even my sugar-addicted self wave a white flag.

It’s customary that I save my best for last, though this review is the exception: I saved the one I was the least disappointed by. I know that we Singaporeans love Biscoff-anything, which is why my choice of Premium Shake was their Lotus Biscoff Coconut Shake (S$5.50). I’ll give Little Miss Coconut credit for the fragrant Biscoff taste, but that’s as far as my compliments will go, because the coconut shake was yet another watered-down cup of disappointment. Come on, guys, please tell me this was just a bad batch.

It goes without saying that there’s a reason why Singaporeans have queued, queue, and will continue to queue for Mr Coconut. It’s the stall that deserves the same number of awards as Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born, and then an extra gold medal from our very own Coconut Shake Showdown. Little Miss Coconut tries, but if I’m going to be dropping five bucks on a drink, it has to do better than half a cup of water.
