You know you’ve lived a memorable childhood if you used to have porridge. Be it with a simple fried egg or some salted egg, they all taste wonderful. Plus, porridge was a warm companion especially when you were down with a fever or cold.

I’m sure we would do anything to reminisce about those days again, so are 10 good porridge places in KL & Selangor to satisfy your craving, especially when you’re there feeling under the weather.

1. Kenny’s Food Cart

Kenny’s Food Cart is definitely my go-to porridge place when it comes to enjoying a good bowl of hearty porridge. Located at Aman Suria, Kenny’s Food Cart serves porridge, noodles and rice.

2. Hon Kee Porridge

Famous for their porridge, Hon Kee Porridge has been around at Petaling Street since 1949. One of their most popular items is the Raw Snakehead Fish Porridge (RM9), which is piping hot enough for you to ‘cook’ raw fish slices in while you eat.

3. Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge

Much like the name suggests, Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge offers a hearty bowl of porridge with frog. Originally from Singapore, they have chain restaurants in other countries like Indonesia, China and Taiwan as well.

You can have your frog in three different ways: Claypot Dried Chilli Frog, Claypot Spring Onion Frog, or Shi Sheng Claypot Frog Porridge. 4. Low Yau Kee Porridge

Another famous porridge place is Lao Yau Kee Porridge, which has been around for five decades. In fact, it was once located at Medan Pasar many years back. Now, the owners of Loa Yau Kee have made a strategic alliance with the famous Soong Kee Beef Noodles by sharing its premises.

You can have your plain porridge with a variety of side dishes: Steamed Chicken, Pork Intestines, Fresh Raw Fish or Pork Intestines. If you have space in your tummy, give the beef noodles a slurp— it’s so good!

5. Taiping Seafood Porridge

Featuring Matang-style seafood porridge, Taiping Seafood Porridge in Puchong is run by the Beh family, who come from the fishing village of Matang, Perak. Back in their hometown, customers would flock to the village to get a taste of their famous seafood porridge, made with the freshest catch.

There are various kinds of porridge to choose from, including the Seafood Porridge (from RM30 up to RM282), which comes with fish, prawns, cuttlefish, fish balls, and minced meat. If you’re feeling like indulging in a fancier meal, you can go for the Four Treasure Porridge (from RM39 to RM372) with fish, prawns, cuttlefish, and crab.

6. Hoong Kee Seafood Porridge

Hoong Kee Seafood Porridge first opened in 1990, and operated at PJ New Town’s Kam Heong Coffee Shop, before closing for business in 2011. Last year, the family-run business decided to begin serving their famous porridge again, right from their home at Overseas Union Garden.

Available via delivery, customers are encouraged to pre-order ahead of time as some orders have limited quantities available. The best thing to order is their Mix All Seafood Porridge (RM23), which includes grouper fish slices, prawns, dried scallops, and lala.

If you have the patience to queue, head over to Pan Heong Restaurant which is supposedly one of the best restaurants in Batu Caves. A little heads up— do come early on weekends or public holidays or you’ll have to register your name with the number of pax and wait for your turn for tables.

This porridge place boasts wall photos of visiting celebrities and politicians throughout the years. A must order here is the Fish Slice Porridge (RM13) which comes with the signature slow-cooked porridge and fresh fish fillets. Definitely not one to be missed!

The name does say it all— “Tasty Porridge” is not some sales gimmick. It does truly live up to its name. Serving Cantonese style porridge since 2012, Tasty Porridge is known for their thick, creamy, and silky porridge.

They serve a variety of porridge: Mushroom Chicken Porridge (RM12.80), Innards Porridge (RM12.50), and Frog Porridge (RM12.80). If you like a bit more variety, you can also opt to have some dishes to follow such as the Deep-Fried Dough Stick (RM2.65), Braised Pork with Salted Vegetables (RM25) or the Spicy Soy Sauce Pork Belly (RM17.90).
