Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge: Satisfying my cravings with Singapore’s authentic fresh frog porridge

Frog porridge. Wait, frog? Instantly my nervous system went into overdrive and I felt queasy at the thought of consuming my favourite Muppet character. Aaron, my colleague cheered me on, hoping a positive word would somehow make me accept the amphibious creature as a part of my dinner plans.

Well I’ve gone as far as consuming monitor lizards and wild boars in curries. So why not frogs? After all, I would be trying award-winning frog porridge at a chain which originates from Singapore— so where better? I buckled down and drove to SS2, Petaling Jaya to the renowned Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge restaurant.

What I tried at Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge

You can have your frog in three different ways: Claypot Dried Chilli Frog, Claypot Spring Onion Frog, or Shi Sheng Claypot Frog Porridge. I opted for the Claypot Dried Chilli Frog (RM16 for one frog) with a side of porridge (RM4.50), hoping the familiarity of dried chilli flavours would help me embrace my carnivorous hopping friend.

And it arrived— in two separate claypots. One filled to the brim with plain porridge, the other frog legs simmering in dried chilli, dark soya sauce, ginger and spring onions. The porridge was average by itself so I definitely recommend spicing it up with the gravy from the dried chilli dish. This really helped to amp up the taste of the porridge. The sauce itself was rather sweet. I was hoping for a little spice from the gravy but instead it was more of the sweet side with the slightest hint of dried chilli.

Now for the frog. Bracing myself, I plucked up what seemed to be a frog leg using my chopsticks and took a bite. Boney but tender, it reminded me of a lot like fish. The frog soaked up all the goodness from the sauce, and it was indeed delicious. But very quickly, the adventurous frog affair became a troublesome one. There was very little meat and it soon became a pile up of frog bones at the corner of my plate. I felt that RM16 for just one frog was definitely way too steep.

Realising that I would quickly get very hungry if I depended on just one frog, I opted for Salted Fish Bean Sprouts (RM11) and the Chinese Omelette (RM11) to add towards my porridge. At first, I was a bit appalled by the price of the two dishes. But once it arrived on the table, a smile swiftly returned to my face as the portions were definitely plentiful. Sufficient for two large eaters or three small eaters, in fact.

Bean sprouts stir fried with salted fish has always been one of my favourite dishes, even as a child. There was just something special about the combination of plain bean sprouts and the addition of salted fish not only enhances the taste but gives this simple vegetable dish such an authentic flavour. Plus, you can’t possibly go wrong with an omelette, which unsurprisingly turned out to be a tasty addition, when eaten with the porridge and gravy.

Final thoughts

Restaurant - dishes

For those of you who aren’t as adventurous to try the frog, there are a few other items that can be chosen at Geylang Lor 9 to help ease your dining experience. These are usually sides to go along with your bowl of porridge such as lemon sauce chicken, Shi Sheng recipe meat roll, Thai style chicken, Chinese cabbage and much more. I was also surprised at how tasty the vegetables were.

But if you’re like me and willing to give this amphibian a chance, please do so at Geylang Lor 9. It’s flavourful and might even convert you into trying frogs in the future. I also read that the other recommended flavour of frog to dine here was the Claypot Spring Onion Frog. Perhaps the next time!

However with such steep prices, I think I might reserve Geylang Lor 9 Fresh Frog Porridge for a special occasion or if with a friend, or if you’re like me and are planning to try frog for the first time. I also found it to be rather difficult to finish the entire claypot of porridge and side dishes all by myself.
