New Gen Coffee House is a new kid on the block situated along Upper Changi Road in Bedok. The kopitiam soft-launched on 15 May 2023 and currently houses 8 food stalls. When the coffee shop officially opens on 5 Jun 2023, there’ll be 2 upcoming stalls (Ah Ma Chi Mian and Buey Tahan Western) joining the current line-up.
When the sun goes down, the place transforms into a hip-looking joint with fancy neon signs and lighting illuminating its surrounding space. To me, it kind of resembled a siam diu (Thai-themed disco)— all it needs is dance tracks playing in the background.
The first thing that caught my eye was the Signature Coconut Chicken Soup (S$8.80) from 蒸有米 Steam Rice Kitchen.
A whole baby coconut was stuffed with black chicken pieces, cordyceps mushrooms, red dates and wolfberries doused in a clean-tasting broth which had sapid coconutty notes. The stall also sells dishes like Pork Stomach Soup (S$5.50) and Lotus Steamed Rice with Beef and Egg Yolk (S$7.90).
云牵一线 (pronounced ‘yun qian yi xian’) sells an assortment of dishes with heavy Eastern influences. Besides crowd favourites like Mala Rice Noodles (S$6) and Spicy Dumpling (S$5.80 for 10 pieces), the Beancurd Rice Noodle (S$5.50) left me the most intrigued.
Tofully: Freshly-made yong tau foo with 4 broths that will soothe your soupy cravings in Bedok
It was a bowl of rice noodles topped with chilli minced pork, carrot strips, crushed and roasted peanuts, roasted peanuts, tau geh, preserved cabbage, Chinese chives, bean curd and fragrant chilli oil.
A unique dish, it certainly grew on me the more I ate it.
Mr Yakiniku (previously located at Ubi industrial estate) has also made the move here. Who says yakiniku cannot be enjoyed alone? Treat yourself to the Beef Set Menu (S$11.80 for 100g), which comes with rice, salad and miso soup.
The menu also features various set menus like Pork & Chicken (S$14.80 for 150g), Seafood (S$15.80 for 180g).
Worried that your vegetarian friend can’t join in the fun? Now they can, by ordering the Plant Based (S$14.80 for 150g) which comes with mushroom, Hokkaido flower squid (made of konjac) and Next Karubi (plant-based meat). Fun!
Enjoy Hakka cuisine at Goldhill Hakka Restaurant 1997 with the Yong Tau Foo Set (S$6.90 for 7 pieces) and the traditional Abacus Seed (S$5/S$7/S$9). If you’re dining with your family, share the Salt Baked Kampung Chicken (S$30).
Slurp on heartwarming bowls of Seafood Soup with Batang Fish (S$10/S$12.50) or Crayfish Seafood Soup with Dory Fish (S$13.50) at Jia Li Seafood Soup.
There’s also He Wei (和味) which serves mixed rice with a myriad of dishes and Xing Le Xing Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Keep a lookout when Buey Tahan Western opens, as they will be serving a new item: Blackpink Chicken Wings. Just check out the picture below to see how cool it looks!
