Imagine my shock when Messy Nasi Lemak announced that they’d be offering 2 extremely different dishes — nasi lemak and ramen. I got a sense of relief when I found out that they plonked themselves in the Ubi estate though.
Considering how challenging it is to find good food in the industrial area, it’s probably not the fact that the food fare isn’t good enough, it’s more likely that they just aren’t famed yet. Just like how my colleague, Gillian, discovered Mei Chin Fish Soup in Ubi!
Interestingly, Messy Nasi Lemak introduces 2 varying fares. Located at Food Wave Coffee Shop in the Frontier Building, they’ve opened their doors since 6 Mar 2023.
The stall was started by a pair of friends, Chef Eddie and Ryuchi, who decided to embark on this endeavour together. Chef Eddie might ring a bell for some— he has over a decade of culinary experience and has had stints in some of the finest hotels in Europe, including 5-star The Savoy London. Previously a fine-dining chef, it’s surprising to see him open up a nasi lemak stall for a change.
First up would be the nasi lemak fare that they’ve prepared. They have over 7 different types of variations in nasi lemak— from typical fried and grilled chicken, to Otak Otak (S$5.50) to Honey Ribs (S$7.50) to Rendang Nasi Lemak (S$7.50).
Good news is that Chef Eddie is a natural when it comes to Western cuisine, as he was trained in Barking and Dagenham College in London, which is why you’d probably find modern inclusions of ribs in the menu.
Furthermore, you’d find that for the money you’re paying, you’d receive a generous portion of food. For S$7.80, the Fish Fillet Set comes with a large bread-crumb battered fillet fish, a sunny-side up, koropok, and your usual nasi lemak condiments on the side.
Interestingly, the grilled chicken leg that you see in the nasi lemak fare is also offered in a ramen dish. How crazy is that?!
You can get a Whole Chicken Leg Tonkatsu Ramen for S$8.90 in a bowl filled to the brim with a whole lot of ingredients. Alternatively, if you’re a purist like me, opt for their signature: Messy Pork Char Siu Ramen (S$8.90).
